Title: Oil pressure sending unit
Post by: My 86 on February 21, 2016, 04:08:49 pm
Can anyone here tell me where the oil pressure sending unit is on a 1986 GMC with a 305 engine? Is it directly behind the cruise control servo or behind the distributor? What all has to be removed to access this in order to replace it. Does it have a 2 prong electrical connector or just 1? I have a gm service manual but it doesn't have much detail about it. The NAPA parts store showed a OP6640 for a replacement sender is this correct?

It will be on the back side of the engine, just left of the distributor. Halfway between the distributor and valve cover. Depending on the tools you have and how sneaky you are, you might be able to get it out without removing anything. On an 86, I believe that is a 3 wire sensor. The GM service manual will provide more info than any other manual. Should have enough pictures and the instructions to remove and replace it.

The oil pressure gauge sender has one spade terminal.  The oil pressure switch for the electric choke has two spade terminals.  An alternate location for either is near the oil filter.
