Title: SPEEDO DONT WORK
Post by: kodalee on March 24, 2016, 09:05:16 am
I just bought a 84 k10 and it was converted to a manual transmission. The speedo doesn't work were should I start to try and fix this. Anything will help.

The speedometer system is simple. You have the gauge on your instrument cluster. In the back of it, there is a cable (think like a bicycle cable) plugged into the rear of it.  Said cable runs down and plugs in somewhere near the front end of your driveshaft. my truck is an automatic, and the cable is plugged into the top of my tranny. It should be easy to find.

Typically, the speedometer is either unplugged at either end, OR, the cable is broken somewhere.

I had the same problem on my 75 K5. It was tough to figure out though, I started by replacing both the speedo and cable. I still had problems and then I was told that the triangular hole in the steel speedo gear that goes into the transfer case can round out. I ended up buying a new steel gear off of eBay and that solved the problem.
