Title: Vortec Serpentine Belt and Reverse Rotation WP on TBI
Post by: 87GMC1500 on March 25, 2016, 09:34:15 am
I have a 87 TBI 350 engine that I am gonna use the late 90's Vortec serpentine belt brackets and accessories on.  I'm confused about the water pump options I have.  I wanted to keep the engine compartment clean I and I don't want to use the stock style water pump with the heater hose fittings on top.  I though the vortec's were reverse rotation but I can't remember if there was an issue with running a vortec wp on a tbi engine.

I've already ordered the Edelbrock 8881 water pump but I'm second guessing myself now.  Has anyone used this water pump?  I did confirm that the water pump is reverse rotation with Edelbrock's tech support.

You are correct on the reverse water pump rotation.  Make sure the fan is the same

Thanks for the input. I'm going to run electric fans.  I'll post some pix once done!

From personal experience the Edelbrock water pumps are well conceived and very effective at cooling, actually outperforming others.  However, they are prone to seeps through the weep; more so with general use extended life (red) coolants.  Hence, I recommend that you use standard (green) coolant, or a HOAT extended life such as ZEREX G-05.

Good note about the coolant. I always use ZEREX G-05 from experience. Hopefully I have everything up and running this weekend.

Whoops!  Its been a while since I logged back in but here is a pic from the install.  Sorry it took forever.  I've gotten a little bit more progress since this picture. (http://)

Reverse rotation is for ease of belt routing.  The pulley runs on the back of the belt.

The 90's LT1 had reverse flow for detonation control.  Judging from the number of cracked Vortec cylinder heads I'd say GM should've done the same with them...
