Title: Steering Issues
Post by: JasonD45 on March 25, 2016, 02:48:24 pm
When making turns, and the wheel is cut all the way, in my '87 3/4 ton V20, there is a loud and awful screech. Sometimes when turning the wheel from left to right, or visa versa (like an s turn), there is also tension like the truck does not want to turn. I was hoping you guy might be able to help me out. I was gonna go ahead and just change the steering pump, but figured I'd look for input first.

Your front axle u-joints sound like they are binding to me

I'm not a mechanic, basically been self taught. Is there anything I can do? Or is it an easy enough fix?  I'm by means dumb when it comes to taking something off and putting it back, but I don't know if that will mess with my alignment or anything

Put the front axle on jack stands.  Assuming you have manual lock out hubs, lock one at a time and turn the the tire while turning the steering wheel.  You will feel it bind up if that is the issue.  Changing out the axle joints isn't hard but it takes a few special tools.  Youtube is full of how too videos that will either get you comfortable with the job or make you decide to take it somewhere and have it done.

I spree it the quick replies! Maybe I'll try a belt and pulley because it sounds easier. But I'll also jack up the front end and attempt the "test" as well. Thanks again!

Have you checked your PS fluid level ? From your description of whats happening sounds like you're just low on fluid....

Sorry for the delayed response, but thank you to all for the input.  It was the u joints, i needed nothing to make it move on the drivers side. So, those are repaired, and i did add a little power steering fluid, things seem much better. thank you all!
