It's hard to tell from the photo, but the front axle looks to be the earlier model D44 based on the hubs ('73-'77ish).  Sounds like a case of an axle swap with a 3/4-ton.

probably swapped a good 1/2 ton body onto a 3/4 4x4 chassis and kept the half ton vin

That is very possible but I've gone over everything and it's jus so clean every nut and bolt it where it should be and the hubs on the 44 are huge

Have you tried decoding the actual VIN to see if maybe the title is a typo?

The big hubs were used on 'early' 3/4-ton Dana 44's.

Look here http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/VIN.htm (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/VIN.htm) and then scroll down to 1979. The file opens as a PDF.

See below for the jpeg.

Big 10 was RPO code F44 and was only used on half ton 2 wheel drive trucks. It included things like bigger shocks and stouter suspension parts for an increased GVWR. It sounds to me like somebody in the past swapped a Big 10 body onto your K20 and ran with that VIN. Looks like your truck might be a mixture of parts. You have headlight bezels that are correct for 73 to 78 trucks, but have the correct 79 and 80 hood with the extra trim lip on the front! Still looks like a nice truck and all the major hard work has probably already been done for you!

Very nice, my brothers(well now my parts truck) was same way was definitely 1 ton, but the vin and glove box codes were all medium duty truck stuff(2.73 gearing 5 speed and two speed rear end)

Welcome. As many members have mentioned, it appears someone has done some moving of parts.

This is evident by:
1-the "big 10" sticker on the bed. As they mentioned, big 10 was for 2wd models only.
2-the front axle according to some members doesn't match for a 79, it does look correct for an earlier 70s model.
3-though the hood is correct for a 79-80 model truck, the grille and headlight bezels are not, they are 78 and earlier.
4-the dash trim, fender emblems, body side emblems(behind the door), door panels inside are all correct for late 70s.
