My truck is a single cab, so if there is a passenger, there is hardly room for any groceries. So I got a slimline toolbox at Lowes for $160, and built a wall in the center of it, and then used foam insulation to make a cooler in one side. Cost about $9 for the 4x8 sheet of insulation and it works pretty darn good!

Oh yea.....
-
That's a really neat setup.
-
Thanks!
-
That's a nice set up.
I usually don't have room in the cooler for groceries.

Yeah, you have to have a pretty big cooler to hold any amount of groceries, and who wants to leave that just sitting in the bed?
The lid on this is removable and folds up to stow away, for the times I don't need cold storage.
-
how well will it hole ice for um you know meat???
-
Don't really know yet, but since I am in Texas, I am sure it will get a true test.
This is about 1/2" foam. If I really wanted to make it an icebox, I'd use something thicker. And drill a hole in the bottom, and stuff it with assorted beverages...
-
That's pretty slick! Gotta have room for those frosty beverages! ;D
-
I'm laughing because everyone is alluding to what they want to say but no one is actually saying it.
So I will.
IT'S FOR BEER!
Now does everyone feel better?
After all, it's not illegal to carry alcoholic beverages in a locked container that is separated from the passenger compartment and can't be accessed while driving. Obviously tho, please drink responsibly and don't drink and drive.
-
lol, it is pretty crafty and i like but i think my tools would get a little cold.
-
Looks pretty nice.
Only suggestion/comment is, be prepared for cracks due to it being an on the rail box.
99% of on the rail boxes I have seen that are alluminum are cracked.
I went with an in bed box to avoid this issue, plus I prefer the sleeker look.

Nope - got tired of beer years ago (Miller stock probably went down that year... ;D). But I am always happy to tote beer for the boozer friends of mine!
-
You guys are all funny! Lol! My question is, how did you seal the seams where the pieces of foam butt together? Wouldn't it leak water out of the seams and flood your toolbox when the ice melts? I understand your purpose is more for cold storage for meat and perishable groceries, but still. Some guys may want to copy your design and use it as an ice chest.
-
I have it pressure fitted in and a few pieces of aluminum duct tape to keep things in place. I honestly never plan to dump ice into it, just carry groceries home in the Texas heat. You know, so my popsicles don't melt on the drive home!
Those who have the need for a beer box can drink a beer or two and get creative!
-
I usually just fill the bed with ice and beer

Nice! That would be so awesome! Too bad you're on the other side of the country from me! That would be a fun weekend project! Lol! Although you might not be able to remember it afterward!
-
lol
-
Yeah. You could lay on the ground on your back with a tube running down from the bed.
-
My parents used to live 45 minutes from the closest grocery store
They would toss two large coolers in the back of their K-5 to bring groceries home in

The ultimate beer funnel!

Yum! :)
-
till someone decides to go swimming in the bed

i always thought you were supposed to put those tools boxes the other way so you can open them from the sliding rear window and grab a cold one
