Title: 1978 Crew cab rocker replacement
Post by: 1978crewcab on April 03, 2016, 06:04:14 pm
Hello, first time working on these old trucks and I guess I picked the hardest one. I need help finding the right parts for the crew cab style rockers.
1.Are they one big inner and one big outer? or
Are they four pieces for each side?

2. Do I need rocker panel backing plates? Or
Outer cab floor section  (see picture)

3. Do I need door posts as well or
Will the rockers go up high enough?

I know I need cab supports as well and floor pans...just trying to figure out what I need for the rocker situation.

        Thanks in advance

I guess I can't add pictures. I tried to upload but it says the file is to large.

Looks like I need outer cab floor section. If I understand it correctly. .it's the full inner rocker section and the outer rocker sits on top of that. Do they make an outer cab floor section/inner rocker for the rear door?

Is there a trick to uploading pictures? I can't get it to work.

Your best bet is to use an external image host, then link them here. I use imgur, as it has phone apps and everything.

As far as the rockers; I don't personally know about the crewcabs. I know regular cabs have one inner, one outer. As far as backing plates/floor section; if they are what I think you mean, they are sold separate and you can get them if you need them.
The rockers, on regular cabs, don't go to the door posts. The cab corners/door posts are sold separate. Crew cabs may be different, I'm not sure.

For posting picture you can also download and use this program PixResizer, it lets you shrink your pictures until they are of a small enough file size to upload directly on the forum.

Update : It turns out nobody makes the rear door rockers for 73-87 crew cab or suburban anymore. If they are totally rotten on your truck or burb. .it's gonna be a total fab job. I actually got lucky and found a 73-87 junk yard near me and cut the rear rockers from a suburban!

AMD, classic parts both offer rear rockers that are more of a patch than complete and can be used with a front rocker to make a complete if necessary. I did get completes from classic back in 07 but it appears they no longer carry them just the patch.

Yes they do make the patch panels but you can't make a rear rocker out of a front rocker ...the front of the rear rocker goes straight up at almost a 90 degree angle at the door post and the front rocker is a lot different. .more like a 45 degree angle. I wouldn't even know where to start and I can't even get any metal guys to do it.

me and my buddy were at his welding shop last night talking about this. he has the bright ideal to order a regular cab rocker and the the one piece from a crew cab then cut the ends off the regular cab and splice them onto the crew cab piece.

It would definitely work if the pieces were still good
