Title: Anti Theft
Post by: Tazman on May 03, 2016, 08:39:04 pm
I know a lot of people do not worry about their truck being stolen but I do. Mine was broken into a couple months ago but they did not get my truck. I use a steering column lock and a kill switch. I was wondering what other guys do. I used to have a blazer where the kill switch was in the temp controls, no one knew it was there. Today a guy told me his dad had one hooked to the lights, very good idea. Any one have some ideas?

Ive seen one where the starter was wired to the windshield washer squirter

I've seen one where they used an oil pressure switch hooked to the coil with a bypass switch under the seat cover by the seatbelt
So when the driver reached for the seatbelt he held the bypass down till the oil pressure came up and made the oil pressure switch complete the circuit to the coil
Not even a passenger or someone standing next to the truck would notice

Why not install a car alarm with an immobilizer? If I was worried about a vehicle being stolen, just putting in a hidden kill would not be enough.

I rigged up a way to padlock the floor shifter to the floor board with the trans in reverse. Then back up angst a wall or lot light to park. I guess a heavy set of bolt cutters  might thwart it but how many car thieves have a heavy set of bolt cutters in their back pocket

Generally I don't worry about mine getting stolen, but when I went on a long holiday a couple of years ago I parked it close to a wall, turned the front wheels to face said wall, and then took the steering wheel off. No-one can drive it, and can't tow it out either. Not a solution for everyday use though...

I've known of just doing simple things because most thief's become would be thives when the item gets to be a little complicated. Like removing an ignition or ECM fuse. On these trucks it's easy to access and simple to pull and replace when needed. If there are any that would check the fuses there are even fewer who would know what should be where.

theres a few vids on youtube that these guys attach a stun gun to a bike with a remote control. when the bike theif takes off on it the light the up. then they put the same thing in the seat of a lambo (if i remember right) and when some dumb guy sits in the seat they light them up. also seen ones with a bate phone that will light the guy up. dont know how legal it is to set someone up like that but its always funny to see someones reaction to 50000 volts.
we have some of that technology at work. but in order to use it you have to take a class on it then they give you the option of having it used on yourself. so you know what i did, i volunteered. it sounded like a good ideal and it was fun then painful then fun again, its been a few months but i still have scars on one of my arms from it and i want it used on my other arm to match but they wont let me lol.

i'm not sure what the details are but i think one thing that is getting popular is you can get a second phone, put it in a hidden place.  Either wire it in so it's always charged, or make sure it's charged manual.  Then you can turn the locator app on and should be able to track the car.

Or something like that?

My new 4.3 does not have a provision for a mechanical fuel pump, so i'll  have to run an electric.   i'll probably put in an inline fuel shut off valve and possibly run a hidden separate switch for the fuel pump.

There are several GPS tracking solutions available now. You can buy them cheap on ebay

I just installed a hidden kill switch. I dont even park anywhere it COULD be stolen. The kill switch gives me plenty assurance. If it cant be started, it cant be driven. In the heat of the moment, dont think they'll go past that.

There was a guy on the rcgroups.com forums that was selling a little fifty-cent-piece-sized transmitter for finding downed RC aircraft. It would broabcast a vocal dictation of its GPS location on a radio frequency, you would have a walkie-talkie to listen in and take down the latitude and longitude report and then try and find it. Not as effective as a cell-service locator beacon, but it wouldn't need a monthly subscription. Might not technically be legal either, but what is and just don't interfere with anything.

I installed one of these on my truck...http://www.amazon.com/Tracker-Control-Version-Software-Tracking/dp/B00OH4ZHFI/ref=sr_1_30?ie=UTF8&qid=1464387152&sr=8-30&keywords=gps+tracker

GPS tracker, they are $35.00 and usually you can wire one in over a weekend. Once it is installed you call it or text it and it replies with the latitude and longitude which you then plug into google maps and it tells the precise location.

Mine works great, it will also alert you through the phone if it moves even an inch. It can also accommodate sirens and ignition shut off. It is really nice bang for your buck, and make sure you hide well under the dash or wherever.

I bought this one and it also runs off a battery, so even if they cut the power to the vehicle, the battery provide 24hrs to be able to track your vehicle.

Hope this helps you guys out

Not that I know of. You do have to put in a new sim card and add minutes, I was able to get $10.00 worth for 100 texts. it lasts a while for me, maybe $10.00 a month at the very most. Basically it's a phone with a tracker in it

My truck is so dang hard to cold start, I'm hoping that discourages them enough to move on.

It only responds to texts when you send one first

so $10 for 100 text. how many times do you plan on pinging your truck to find it? im confused as to why you would need this many. i would only want 5 and only use it if my truck was MIA.

Well first my truck has a manual choke and most non car guys under 40 don't know how to use it and if it is below 60 out good luck starting it without the choke.

I also have an ignition kill switch on the dash, its in the open but originally I planned on 2 more for dummy switches then mislabeling them. I also run a batt cut off that is hidden between the core support and grill. You have to stick your arm up under the bumper and between those two to find it, It has a removable "key" so with out it there good luck.

I also used to run a chain to lock the hood down, it went through a hole in the core support and wrapped around the frame with a lock. But it was a pain to check oil etc and in case of emergency with the engine I didn't want to worry about having to unlock it.

No worries there. I saw a guy at a car show with a battery cut off switch mounted right at the battery post. Not many thieves will look under the hood to see whats wrong.
