Title: Dome light not working.
Post by: Barraphernalia on December 05, 2005, 11:05:00 am
85 Silverado SWB-2WD

In the 9 years I've had my truck, the dome light has only sparatically worked half a dozen times or so for a couple of days at a time. I'm about to completely redo my interior and would like to fix this while I have everything apart. Does anyone have any idea where I could start?

Thanks,
Barry

Is the light blowing out?  Is there a bad ground, or a crosswire somewhere?  What are the symptoms leading to it not working.

I guess I don't really know. It didn't work at all when I got the truck, and then one day, a long time ago, I opened the door and it came on (it worked normally- when doors were open and with the hedlight knob.) It worked for a couple of days or so and then stopped working altogether again. This has happened a few times over the years. I've never messed with it.

Does it work with the headlight knob now?

Is the dome light getting power to it?  There may be a short in the wiring going to the dome or the one in the door switch wiring.

I've had this problem before.I found door switches in pillar corroded allowing it to function intermittantly.Changed switches(they were both bad) and worked fine......until they rusted again....

Thanks for your replies, sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I guess I'll work my way from the light back with a volt meter when I start taking everything apart. (and I'll check those door switches)

It wouldn't be the door switches if the light does not come on by turning the headlight switch all the way counterclockwise.  The headlight switch would override the door switches.  I agree w/ Chris....look at the wiring.

Whoops! Next time I should read the thread more carefully before I reply.I agree,it shouldn't be the door swithes if it doesn't work with the switch knob.
