Title: Overhead console install on 87
Post by: Woober on June 13, 2016, 07:11:21 pm
Guys,

I am redoing my headliner and putting in an overhead console.

Ready to put everything back together, but need some info on how to connect the wiring.

I removed the existing dome light, and am going to use those wires to power those lights that come on when the doors are open.

What is the best way to get power to the map lignts? There are a bunch of exposed wires that were hidden by the headiner, but thought I would ask, before trying to tie into something.

The map lights are fed constant 12v so they can be operated with the ignition off.  Usually an orange wire about 20 gauge in size.

Problem is, mine did not have the console originally.  Only the dome light. I have to find a wire to power the map lights.

Unless it changed in the later 80's models, there should be constant 12v at the dome lamp itself with the door jamb switches providing a ground path for the dome lamp.

BD explains it better here:http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=30872.msg259164#msg259164 (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=30872.msg259164#msg259164)
