I have always done what I can to keep my truck running its best. I have asked several questions on this forum and have always gotten the answer I needed. Yet now I have a new one. Lately when starting up it would act like it was not firing and I would try again after a couple tries it started. So I did not think much of it. Until on the way home I am coming up to a red light and all of a sudden it sluggish and died right in the road. Put it park and it wanted to do the same thing but I gave it gas and she started up and it worked fine the rest of the way home. Even idled great at another light. I do not think it it vapor lock since I never let the gas get under a half tank. Anyone have any ideas?
What also stumped me there was no code.
Thanks

Have you ever changed your pick up coil in the distributor? Before it goes out completely it will act as you describe...
-
No I have not. I did put in a new DEI distributor a few years back and replaced it then. I did changed the fuel filter a little while ago, it had been six months since last changing it.
-
Did you get a good HEI or an eBay special?

Check your fuel pressure next time it happens and listen for the fuel pump. If okay look at the ignition module and pickup coil
-
No I got a good one, have been very happy with it. Did drive to work today and it started and worked fine. I will keep an eye on the coil if it happens again. I greatly appreciate your help.

Okay its at it again. When starting if it keeps running the idle is low enough I have to give it gas. Or it does the same and acts like its not firing, with this do you guys think it is the coil?
Thanks

Did you do as Vile suggested?
-
No I did not check the pressure as of yet but when I turn the key I wait to hear the fuel as always and it sounds as good as always.

Hearing the fuel pump run is a good sign, but doesn't say much about the pressure developed. You need to verify the pressure to eliminate it as a cause. Another grass roots check that doesn't cost anything (but will likely result in engine ping under load and may set a code) is to unplug the EGR valve to determine whether it is modulating when it shouldn't due to the EGR solenoid bleeding through. Once fuel delivery and EGR are eliminated as causes, you will be faced with troubleshooting the ICM and pickup coil. Assuming a divorced ignition coil, check the distributor harness connections to the ICM and perform a wiggle test on the module and coil connectors. Be sure to use a liberal coating of dielectric heat sink compound under the ICM if you remove it.

To help with this I am looking into the CFM-Tech Fuel Psi Gauge Adapter For GM Tbi 2.8/4.3/5.0/5.7/7.4 from the site listed here.I would like to know if anyone else has used this and how does it work.
