Gonna be honest I have no idea what this part is ....4 of them came between the two star wheel kits. I know it's prob something simple but I really don't know

Referring to the part in your fingers - you can discard it.
Some applications with drum brakes have adjustment windows in the backing plates through which to insert an adjusting "spoon." The part you are holding is a dust cover for said windows. GM adjustment windows are in the faces (or flanges) of the drums instead of the backing plates. Typically, there is an oval knockout in the face of each drum that can be dislodged with a hammer and 1/4" punch. You can cover the resulting windows if you prefer, but it is unnecessary and rare for anyone to bother. Generally, the covers should be used only in applications that adjust through backing plate windows.

Thank you ... My backing plates have no slot at all I also do not see where I would remove a knockout in the drums either my left side was locked up so I had to use a 4 lb sledge to get it off. Also noticed the star wheel on that side was installed backward by former owners mechanic.

Another interesting thing I did not know there were two different color springs used in the forward and aft hold downs..... I was told the shorter yellow (these were the colors that came in my kit) goes on the aft hold-down and the longer green goes in the front of the assembly that only holds the shoe down

Sometimes the knockouts are obstructed by balance weights welded onto the drum.

Behind the shoes looks wet. Was that from the wheel cylinders? Might want to inspect you axle seals while you're in there.
