Title: Is there a better heater blower motor than stock available?
Post by: 86 NH BOWTIE on August 22, 2016, 03:15:47 pm
Hi guys, just wondering if anyone knows of a better blower motor for the heater than is available for stock. My 86 K-10 has good heat but the blower motor doesn't deliver very well yet seems to be working in all 3 speeds. Thanks!

I have heard but have not confirmed that a blower motor from a 88 on up C/K (next body style) is better.

I read that somewhere too. http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=19365.0
It seems the early T400 1988-94 blower resolves to the same part number as the 73-91.

Is the little white tab on the blend door in one piece?
Have you gone over the flaps for leaks etc?

If the truck has factory AC use NAPA part #BK 6552407 (https://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p/BK_6552407/BK_6552407_0197435918) or equivalent.  Be sure to reconnect the blower motor cooling hose.  The updated motor and cage produce a respectable volume increase.

The aftermarket motor I could get only accommodates those trucks with AC as it has a very deep blower wheel and I have the standard, shallow heater box. It was a P129 or something like that. I tried my wheel on their motor and it was just a bit too deep still because of the offset of the motor and mounting plate. However, I did get the Pepboys replacement motor by VDO (for the 86 K-10) and it was twice as powerful as the one I took out and I am very happy with it.

PS: As a side note, I must say I removed a mouse motel of seat cushion stuffing from the heater box and cleaned it all up. Have to guess part of the performance gain was due to partial blockage. Also, the new motor spun so much faster, it destroyed my aged wheel and I now have one of those on order as well.

Metal cloth over the air intake to the heater box will slow em down.
Rodents don't like chewing steel, copper, and aluminum screen.

I usually put screen over the defroster vents between the pad and the dash.  Keeps the 22 and 30-06 shells and my keys out of the heater box.
If you're really ambitious you could screen the floor vents as well.

This kind of crap significantly reduces air flow as well

Those are pretty clean in comparison to some I've seen.
