I just added an edelbrock 1406 carb to my 84 C10 and had to add a bracket to attach the TV cable to the throttle arm. I'm trying to fine tune the length of the cable to adjust my shift points now. Here's what I'm seeing at the cable's current length for shift points with light throttle:
1-2 gear hard shift at 20 mph
2-3 gear basically undetectable unless I let off the throttle completely and I can kinda feel a shift around 35ish mph
3-4 gear hard shift at 48-50 mph depending on how lightly I'm pressing the throttle.
Good? Bad? Should I pull the cable out towards the throttle arm slightly to lower the shift points? I'm not sure if this transmission has a shift kit installed or how this would affect the shift points

Are you sure that the cable adjustment changes shift points?
That's not how I understand it works.

That is not how that cable works at all and will lead to failure of tranny(sometimes in as little as 10 miles)
The cable gets set 1 of 2 possible ways.
1: Press the button, push cable in, release button, go put the accelerator pedal to the floor.
2: Press button, push cable in, keep holding button, and either have someone step on the accelerator, or use the throttle arm on the carburetor and pull to full throttle.
You can fine tune just a wee bit by pulling or pushing the cable in a click after setting it like above, but I don't really advise it.

Thanks for the responses guys. I forgot to mention that when I installed the new TV cable end clip (I accidentally broke the old clip removing the old carb), I did push and hold the button, and then push the throttle arm to full throttle. From there I made a few additional much smaller adjustments to the cable. I read the responses here and had a minor freak out earlier today, and readjusted the TV cable using the full throttle procedure. I noticed the second time I made the adjustment by pushing the arm to full throttle the cable housing was pulled much further away from the bracket than what it was previously. I started driving home from work. Shifting seemed smooth, but a mile down the road I momentarily let off the gas, then tried to reaccelerate. I hear a grinding noise and little to no acceleration response. I pulled over immediately. Made a minor adjustment to the cable by pushing it back into the housing slightly. This grinding noise, pulling over, minor adjustment process happened 5 or 6 times before I couldn't hear any grinding noise anymore. I hope my transmission isn't ruined, what do you guys think? Sorry for the long post, I'm kinda freaked out right now.

How's your tranny?
I know everyone says that the TV cable has to be dead on. I also admit to not having much experience with them. I do believe that there is a little more leeway than we are told but it's best to err on the safe side.
A grinding noise wouldn't necessarily be caused by the cable out of adjustments. I believe that burned clutches are the result.

Sorry completely forgot about this thread. Drop the tranny pan( don't just drain oil, drop the pan)
2 things I would like to know, is the cable still attached at the tranny end? In very very rare instances I have seen them come undone, normally it's pretty hard without wiggling the cable.
And how black is the bottom of the pan, if it is a layer of dark grey black, it is very possible the clutches are spent(might not have even happened after the new carb, but before and it was going out the door unnoticeably.
Hopefully we can solve this without telling you the tranny is toast.

Here's what it looked like earlier today when I dropped the pan. Didn't look too bad. I replaced the gasket for a second time in the past couple of months cuz fluid was seeping out of the pan after I was driving it kinda hard on the highway. Hopefully this will take care of the leak. I drove it around after I replaced all the fluid, seemed to shift fine into all gears. What do you guys think?

Sounds like you got it adjusted right now, that little bit of material doesn't look that bad, I've seen worse.
