Well, the time has come to put the my old truck to rest. I have suffered yet another major engine problem and I have finally decided it is in my best interest to retire the truck.
Back in July, we had a strech of weather here in central CA where the temperature was over 100° for about a week straight. On one of those days I used the truck to tow a 75 3/4 ton 4x4 rolling frame on the shop's flat bed trailer. I had the a/c going and all was well, then I glanced at my gauges and found the temp was pegged on max, when I came to stop, I started to get steam from the front of truck, radiator cap area. So when I got the truck home I found the coming fans had failed. One fan motor froze up and wouldn't even turn by hand, the other was making a terrible bearing noise and sounded like it was about to grenade itself. This also caused the wiring to become over powered and melted. Being these fans were less than a year old, I was discounted the price of the fans on a newer, much more expensive, better set. So I installed the new fans with new, better wiring all was well.
Then my transmission took a poop. Some of you may have seen my 4L60 rebuild post. So I got that all fixed up and kept driving the truck. Before the trans went, I never had any temperature or drivability issues after the new fans were in use. After the rebuilt transmission was in, it was working well but I kept having overheat issues. The truck kept running warm and overheated twice. I found coolant in oil.
So I removed the intake and found a blown out coolant crossover gasket at the right front coolant crossover passage. Got that fixed and started to get the oiling system cleaned out and I then started to get thick white plumes of smoke from the passenger side exhaust pipe. I have dual exhaust on the truck with no crossovers, each bank of the engine is independent of the other. So I did some diagnostics on passenger side chambers. I found cylinders 2, 4 & 6 had 175 psi compression and 8 had 165 psi. I also found that cylinders 2, 4 & 6 spark plugs were normal but cylinder 8 was heavily coolant fouled. Then using my boroscope, I found the same 3 forward chambers looked ok but the #8 chamber had coolant in it. So I removed both cylinder heads and inspected them BOTH cylinder heads and BOTH head gaskets were in good shape. No cracks, no damaged, the gaskets were in very good shape. So I was standing there, examining the deck surface and noticed that the #8 piston looked a little odd, I mean, I think that this would be considered odd.

So trying to figure out where exactly that chunk had gone, I dropped the piston to the bottom of the stroke and found another issue, if that's what you want to call it.
So now I've got 1 pinky finger sized piece of a piston that has vanished into thin air, most likely small pieces blown out the exhaust port and 1 credit card length crack in the piston wall. So now my 1 year old short block is toast and I need a new one. That being said...
I am at a time in my life were my priorities far out way my ability to keep the truck going. It's becoming very expensive and time consuming to keep it on the road. It's all consuming. It would actually be more cost affective and smarter to be making a monthly payment on a newer truck than trying to keep mine in running condition. I have multiple appointments with multiple law enforcement agencies and it is imperative that I can relay on my transportation. Not to mention I still have to be able to get to my current job reliably.
So I have decided to "package" up the truck for storage to sit for an undefined amount of time until I have the funds and ability to properly and slowly restore it. I will most likely sell off the heads, intake, transmission and fuel injection setup to help pay off some bills and put myself in a better financial situation.
Sunday nite I bought a used truck. It's a 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, extended can, short bed, 4x4, LT. It has a LQ4 6.0L & 4L80E. I would have preferred a Duramax but it serves no practical purpose and the 6.0L is still an excellent choice. It has 163K miles and needs some TLC but it's actually a really nice truck. For the price, I really got a great truck and I'm really loving it so far.
Here it is.

I got the bed cover from a coworker who just sold his 05 short bed Duramax. I do have a short list of small things to fix and a few things I want added to the truck. Also, those are the wheels and tires of my square, I swapped them for what came on this truck as mine were much nicer and newer. I plan to replace the missing fog lights, put telescoping tow mirrors on, add an aftermarket touch screen radio that has satellite radio, Bluetooth & rear view camera. Also plan to add an alarm kit that has security and remote engine start using the factory key fobs. I may even get some chrome nerf bars or power folding steps. I haven't made up my mind on the steps yet.
The truck is an LT so it has leather, heated, full power seats with memory positions, basically fully loaded for the day, off road and towing packages.
I'll keep anything I add or do to this truck on this thread, other than the stuff I want, I'm just going to enjoy this truck as it is.
I WILL continue to be a regular member on this site and help as much as I can. I would like to thank every single person who has helped me in any way with my squarebody up to this point. Your help has been greatly appreciated. I will NOT be getting rid of the truck. It will live to see another day, tho I have no idea when that will be. I've had it since I was 16, I can't bring myself to get rid of it. I'll post more pics of the new truck as I get the interior cleaned up and little things fixed.
Thank you very much again everyone!

Too bad on the square body.
You'll love the '02. My wife has that exact same truck only in red. When I was hauling chat to my driveway I have towed 17,000# with hers. That 6.0L should not be underestimated.
-
Kevin, sorry to hear about the C20. It's always disappointing when a passionate project looms uncooperative.
I agree with Engineer, you'll love the '02. It should provide years of reliable service.
-
I did that with my truck for a couple years too. Just didn't have the funds to keep it on the road. I bought a supposed rebuilt crate engine for my truck and I ran it for half a summer until the piston wrist pin came loose and wore a thick groove in the cylinder bore. Totally trashed the engine. Grrrrrr. This will give you time to get your truck up and running perfect again. Enjoy the 6.0. Lots of snot!!! Buddy has a tow truck with one. Hasn't found anything it wont pull.
-
i was in the same boat----it was taking TOO long to get the truck running and i was looking at similar trucks----2000 and newer trucks and/or tahoes/S-10's etc. Because i, too, felt that it would be more efficient to just make monthly payments or pay for a newer truck outright, or to even buy a running square than to keep jacking around trying to get mine running.
Now that i have the truck running, there is no need to get a newer one. And it runs smooth.
Not that i don't enjoy working on the truck. But i just don't have the time, expertise, and equipment for this kind of thing to be practical at this point.
But i was definitely seriously going to go to CarMax, sign on the dotted line and GO.
-
P.S. How old was the engine?

About a year or so.

welcome to the new club lol. sad about your square, imo i would go to a junkyard and get a 350 and put it in for 300 or so. could possibly get away with keeping your heads/cam. or sell them like you said and pay for the 350. do you plan on keeping the square even as its just a weekend driver?

I'm glad that your going to stick around as a member even though the 73 is going into storage.
I always enjoy your post, and your knowledge of the ins & outs of a GM dealership and you access to part numbers has been a big asset to this forum
Maybe the moderators can can open a section for "long term storage" vehicles. I'm laughing as I type this, but I'm sure some members (like me) have some cool squarebobys that were put into storage and forgotten about.
Hopefully once you follow your family's tradition and get a job in Law enforcement you will have the $$ to put a duramax in the 73.

Ya know LT, I was picking up a friend at the chevy dealer just yesterday, and while he was talking to the service dept. i took a real dangerous stroll. Yup, out on to the lot to see new birth! Wow, i mean talk about pure luxery. I sat in what was like a cockpit, controls and screens and gadgets everywhere, it was a 2017 2500 HD, fully loaded. Compared to that my 1977 c10 seemed so ancient! But, of course, i had to know what that little number in the lower right hand corner on the window sticker showed. And the survey says....

$52, 485. Thats like $800 a month for the next 6 years. That brought me back to reality real fast. But boy what a driving machine. You could put 200k miles on that truck and do nothing except change the oil every 15k mi. What a difference since 1977. I think you did well, you have a modern truck and didnt pay $52k, and you still have your classic for a little later down the road. Nice job.
-
52K for a 3/4 ton? Don't think so. Does it have the duramax? It does not appear so. In that case, add $8,000. So, $60,000 for something to tow a boat around occasionally. Not a good move.
-
I can remember when a fully decked out Peterbilt could be bought for $60,000.00. Hmmmm........
-
Mercedes is coming out with a pickup next week. i don't have the link.
So i guess the new trend is higher priced pickups. Pickups and SUVs have become the full size car?
Think about it----Crown Victoria, Caprice, bonneville, lesabre, electrica, 88,99 etc. all gone.
-
52K for a 3/4 ton?
Yep. One of the recent diesel truck mags featured the new 2017 Ford Super Duty crew cab w/ the 6.7 turbo diesel. All the bells and whistles. It was $85K!! Wow.

Unbelievable! Thats half the cost of my house! I'd sure like to know who's buying these trucks. And no, that truck above did not have the duramax, so yes, add another $8k. Total--$60. In the mid 90's they were like $28k, fully loaded diesel. What the heck happened??

I don't really want to bother trying to put a 3rd engine in, especially one that doesn't have the muscle mine had. It's not going to be doing any driving, even on weekends. The engine is done and I'm not putting another in. It's just gonna have to sit for a few years until I'm financially able to strip it down and restore it slowly over time.

That's mine plan, probably going to he 6-10 years out tho. I'm probably be married with kids by the time I get around to fixing that truck up. The next engine to go in that truck WILL be a Duramax and nothing else.

Yea I didn't want anything that wasn't an HD, I justpersonally prefer having a 3/4 ton with ample hauling abilities, just in case.

Oh that's nothing, pick the High Country option and it's like an automatic 10-12 grand more and if I'm going to buy brand new, it will be a high country and it will be diesel. Next thing you know your at 70K. And I'm on these new cars and trucks everyday so it's like nothing to be moving 40-80K vehicles around, even higher if it's any type of above basic level corvette. Most expensive Chevy I ever drove was above brand new Z06 vette, all the extra carbon fiber options, track options, like 120-130K car and they let me drive it around off the lot. No biggie...

Try more like 10K+ for diesel, diesel comes with DEF, that crap is stupid expensive. It was 8K like 8 years ago.

Yea but the diesel was a 6.5 and the D-max is far better. And lots of people are buying these trucks, lots of farmers and stuff out here, cops and firefighters and retired folks.
-
Speaking of the D-max, I did an oil change on this thing Thursday. 06 AM General H1 Humvee, 6.6L Duramax diesel, Allison trans, (military switched to Duramax when they stopped using the 6.5T) military tcase and axles, military surplus, full custom interior, I'm taking custom dash, power windows, locks, ac, custom sound system, roof mounted drop down tv, DVD player, touchscreen radio, front and rear facing cameras, and all the military stuff worked, had the military wheels with working auto-inlfating on board air system, giant front mounted winch. And shockingly, compared to some vehicles I've worked on, this thing was easy to change the oil and check everything, didn't spill a drop of oil and we even had wiper blades for it haha. The owner was super cool and talked to me the whole time, let other employees look at it. He said he spent like 30K tricking it out after he bought it and he bought it for over 100K , I think around 150K. Thing had no cats, no exhaust filter, no mufflers, just straight pipe 4 inch exhaust, thing sounded BEAST. Those tires are 37's.

i just priced a few new trucks at the chevy website just out of curiosity:
a base Colorado(there is actually one trim level BELOW W/T) longbed with 4 cylinder and nothing else is $20,995 no incentives offered at this time and you can't get an automatic with this trim level. If you want an automatic, add about $3,500 because they make you buy a whole lot of unrelated stuff.
a stripper "W/T" 1/2 ton standard cab longbed silverado with 4.3 and NOTHING ELSE is $25,377 after all incentives.
a W/T 2500 HD standard cab longbed with the gas 6.0 engine and nothing else is $30,373. If you want the duramax, add $8,000. NOt worth it in my opinion unless you do a lot of driving.
a W/T 3500 HD standard cab longbed with 6.0 engine, dual real wheels, 5th wheel prep package, and hitch package is $33,246 after all incentives. Again, add $8,000 if you want the duramax.

How about for the 4 door?

A 10 year old Freightliner Columbia or International ProStar can be had for the same money. It's not for everybody but it is the route I am taking when I get my monster truck done. I could haul my monster with a dually but why when I would be maxed out with the 1-ton and have gobs of unused capacity with an OTR rig.

Well this must have been a JLTV because it had all of military markings, stickers and labels under the hood. The engine label on the air filter box said "2006 AM General 6.6L Diesel"

right now i looking for an 06-07 crewcab duramax. theyre going for 16k-30k depending on miles. around 100k youre looking at 30k. i wont have a problem paying for one of those. the 06-07 vin code "d" are pre emissions crap for the most part. if you go to the first duramaxs 01-04 LB7 have injector problems which can cost 3k+ to fix cause theyre under the valve covers and you have to take everything off to get to them 04-06 lly have small problems like headgasket for the higher millage.

Preaching to the choir here, I see that all the time.

If the new trucks were under 30k, like they should be, i'd buy one today. I need the extended cab with the short bench seat and 4x4 of course. Thats it.

There's always certified pre-owned from your local GM dealer.

Then i'll look at those certified...

There's always certified pre-owned from your local GM dealer.
That's the route we went.
To replace our '01 Tahoe, we had been Suburban shopping for over a year. Was looking for a '08-'12 model, but more importantly wanted low miles. Around here, it seems like people buy Suburbans and hold onto them.
This last summer, I spotted a '15 GMC Yukon XL on the lot at a GM dealer the next town over and stopped to look... Ended up buying it. It had very low miles, was very clean and had just about every bell and whistle. While it was more (in most every way) than what we were originally shopping for, it cost significantly less than a new Suburban or Yukon XL with fewer options. While I absolutely hate car shopping, this purchase went well.
-
That would surely suffice!

But back to the engine; i know it was a small block, but was it reman or new? If reman, what brand?
It was a reman, it's an ATK Performance short block. It was actually a vary nice unit.
i have heard that ATK's performance division is totally separate from their stock replacement division. Nevertheless i have seen TOO MANY negative reviews regarding ATK, at least concerning the stock engines, and that's the main reason i didn't go with them. Also Jasper has been getting WAY TOO MANY bad reviews also lately----i was actually seriously considering putting a 229 v-6 or even a 200 v-6 in the truck! So no Jasper either. That was and is sad.
i'm pleased as punch with the Chevrolet Performance 4.3. Runs really smooth. i have a hunch that these GM remans are remanufactured by Mercury Marine based on the way they are painted. But that's fine. It's a quality product.
-
If the stupid thing hadn't over heated and cracked the block it would still be going strong. I didn't have any issues with the ATK block.
-
Ok, so you think it was the overheating that did it;
So i guess what they (ATK) was saying is generally correct---that their hi-performance division is totally separate from the stock replacement division.

Oh I know for a fact that's what did it. I fully inspected this block before I put the top end together and put it in the truck. It was flawless. As silly as it sounds, I kinda wish it had cracked one of my aluminum heads instead, that would have been easier to fix and I would still get to drive my truck but I think it was about time I put her to rest for awhile. My current life situation demands reliable transportation and so far I'm really enjoying the new truck. I think I really found a good one, I'm really really happy with it.
The whole situation is bitter sweet. It's exciting with the new truck, trying for a new career, all that but also saddening that I won't be driving the old girl anymore.

So ya'll remember when I said I was going to get the telescoping tow mirrors? Well the other day I folded the mirrors in to go thru the car wash and the retainer ring in the passenger side mirror came off and the mirror went floppy, so dead weight and the wiring is the only thing holding the mirror the base. I took the mirror apart to try and pop the retainer ring back on, that was a no go, you need a press as the spring is very tight and the mirror has to be fully disassembled off the truck. I wasn't going to bother with that. Now, mind you, I've taken multiple mirrors apart for customers to fix them or put new glass on. Well for the first time, on my own truck, I CRACKED the glass when I popped it off. So now I have a floppy mirror and cracked glass. I just ordered the tow mirrors off Amazon and I did the free 30-day Prime trial so they should be here Monday.
For 99-02 trucks, heated and power. SEXY.

Or you could revert back to original factory application.
-
Or you could revert back to original factory application.
Technically, these are factory. These were offered factory after the 99-02 trucks. A few companies over the same design for 99-02 trucks, they have the correct pigtail connector and mounts for 99-02 models. 03 and up model trucks have different mounts and connectors. They are also offered on 07-13 models and early 14-15 models. So, they aren't factory but really they are. They are even power and heated like my factory mirrors. The only two mirror styles from 99-02 are the standard design which I currently have and the manual telescoping camper mirrors with built in blindspot mirror which were never power adjusting or heated. After 02, the standard style and manual camper style were available ALONG with two new styles. 1 being the power adjusting, heated, manual telescoping with turn signal and seperate manual adjustable style I posted and 2 being a power adjusting, heated, turn signal with power telescoping model but no blind spot of any kind. All 4 designs were completely different in shape, size, features and price.
-
My wife's truck came with tow mirrors and I took them off to put the factory bel (below eye line) mirrors on it. The only trailer we have right now is a flat bed gooseneck so tow mirrors aren't a big deal. That, and I don't have to worry about her whacking them on our garage door opening.
-
The standard mirrors were fine on my Tahoe, but on the 25 & 3500 trucks, they look to small to me. I really like having the separate adjustable blind spot mirrors. I use them more then the big mirror.

I prefer either style of towing mirror on 2500 and 3500 trucks. Not a fan of the camper mirror and the standard mirror only belongs on 1500 and Tahoe and Suburban models.
-
So many options and configurations. Not like the 70's. Sport, dumbo or trailer.
The body shop said i could easily switch to the small sporty mirrors, and ditch the dumbos. However, not a big concern for me right now.

Sport mirrors are pointless on trucks, they belong on cars, not trucks. I hate em.
-
The small mirror is ok on the driver's side, but on the passenger side it really doesn't work well; i have to rely mostly on the windshield mounted mirror for anything on the right side. If i carry a load that blocks this center mirror then i'm in trouble.
One good thing about the small mirrors is i think they are better for aerodynamics.

These trucks have the aerodynamic properties of a cinder block. The shape of the mirror does NOTHING to improve that.

Used the truck to tote the shop trailer around last night to move some large furniture for my girlfriend's sister. Truck never even blinked.

LT, arent you in cali? Look farmy in that pic.
Oh, btw- i agree the small mirrors are useless, but they look good. Imo.
-
Yea, I live in the country lol. I live next to a turkey farm, the other side is alpacas my landlord owns and across the street is the pasture for a dairy. It's nice.
-
Took the shop trailer back earlier this afternoon and found my mirrors were delivered. I plan to put them on tonight when I get home.
-
New mirrors are on. They look great, work perfectly. The heaters warm up faster than my old mirrors. They should lol, they're new.
-
Something tells me they're NOT small and sporty, lol. Glad the new truck is working well for you, from the pics it looks clean, new tires and all. I should do the same, that is..have a second vehicle. My 77 is a daily driver, winter and all. I think after I paint it in the spring i'll put it to bed during the cold salty winters.

No where near small and sporty lol.

I'm getting new tailgate handle clips, a new tailgate handle bezel, new antenna base and antenna mast today. All of these things are broken.
-
Looks great! Oh, and thats a nice looking 92-97 generation ford f-series in the background. I gave up my 97 f-350 pwrstroke diesel 7.3 turbo For my 77 c-10. I like my classic better, but i miss the rig.
Oh, and another thing LT, all your pics have palm trees in the background too. Do you have to rub it in like that?! C'mon man!

That's a coworkers ferd, got it from his dad who can't drive anymore. As for the Palm trees, those are in the Honda dealer lot next door. In the first picture you should be able to spot the remnants of a tweaker hotel. Haha.
I'm loving the mirrors. I got the antenna base and mast replaced last night. Radio signal is much better, still a little static, either I have some speakers going south or a dirty connection somewhere. It's tolerable now tho, much better than half static and no antenna as all.
-
Also replaced the tailgate handle clips and bezel.

Tailgate looks mint.
Hey, why not just drop a crate 350 in your classic? You'd be right back on top again.
-

I'm not spending any more money on it. I would have to be able to finance a crate engine, i physically can not afford to finance any more major expenses on it. Im not even driving it and I'm still paying off the stupid transmission I just had built right before the engine went south. And it wouldn't be anywhere near as powerful as it should be for a 3/4 ton, I'm already making a truck payment now, it's financially stupid to be making 2 truck payments when I can only afford one. If I did, that would be the 4th engine in 7 years. Like I said before I just can't do it, it not reliable and it's to expensive to keep going on daily use. It's gonna have to sit until I can afford to restore it.
-
lt if you were a lot closer i would give you a 350 just to get her going, sorry bud

I very much do appreciate your offer but it was time to start playing adult and get something else anyway. I kinda had considered off and on getting another vehicle but when I found the issues it just was like "ok, that's it. Pulling the plug."
-
"playing adult" lmao, people need things to keep them busy. some like drama some like fishing some like drugs, me i love working and driving these old trucks around
-
I like fishing.
LT, your probably doing the right thing. Be careful that the new truck payments dont exceed continuous repair on your classic.
Often folks that have a decent vehicle start having a few problems and panic that they are spending too much, but the payments on a new vehicle are worse. If a new engine costs 5k, but a newer truck cost 18k, well there you have it. Slowly save up for a nice new engine, save...dont finance. If a 350 is too small then put this engine in it.

Just kidding, but you know what i mean.

LTZ,
I put 1 of my trucks to bed over 6 years ago.
It still hasn't woken up.
Maybe we should start a poll to see who's truck wakes up first (I'm thinking yours will).

God I hope so. But my girlfriend is ready to get married, 4 years together this month. Then I hope I get one of these jobs with a LEO agency. I hope I can do afford it in less than 10 years.
-
Tell her marrag is like a fine wine. The long you take to make it the better it taste. Took me 7 years to gt married, the reason was I totaled my impala and it's kind of an eye opener when your head is sticking out the sun roof or window and you feel mud and grass on your face. I realized that life isn't guaranteed and don't let a minute pass that you don't use to the best that you can.
-
True that.

On Wednesday I took about a 2 hours drive up to the bay area from the valley for a polygraph test for the local PD I'm currently hiring with. Well I filled up on my way out of town. It's a 26 gallon tank, I went 2 hours up, 2 hours back, sat in traffic both times for a bit. I also went to the next town over on Thursday, around town Thursday, work and back Friday, also went to next town over again Friday night and another small town Friday night and in the morning when it's cold I let the truck idle for 10-15 min to warm up with the windshield, mirror, back window defroster and seat heaters on. Last night put gas back in right when the low fuel light turned on, literally, was about to be on E, pulled up to gas pump, put truck in Park, fuel lite came on, put gas in. So from Wednesday morning to Friday night I got 311 miles out of 1 tank. That's about 12 mpg's average. I know I can probably get and did get about 15 when I was driving back and forth on my Bay area trip cuz I usually sit the cruise on 60. Can't complain tho, 12 average is WAY better than the old truck got, not bad for 6.0. So far, I'm really loving this truck, no complaints. Was easy, comfy and hummed along flawlessly on my trip.
-
Yah, so howd the poly go?

I was laughing so hard I hit the quote button twice.
-
In all honesty, a friend of mine with a spot free record, not even a speeding ticket, ever,,he had to take the poly during the last phase of a game warden job in ct, this was a dream job, he said after the poly test he felt like a criminal, he was drilled so bad, didnt even want the job after that. He failed it and wasnt even nervous. Go figure. They are looking for a pattern of lying. "Have you ever been drunk?" "Yes", next question, "have you EVER driven drunk?", Uh oh,,,"yes" game over mate. And if you answer no, your lying. Tricky, tricky...
-
Well, first off, there is no such thing as a lie detector test.
The way he explained it to me was that a polygraph monitors your breathing, heart rate and blood pressure so that when you are dishonest, the body automatically changes these things and the polygraph picks up those changes. Easiest way to explain it, it works exactly the same as a seismograph for earthquakes. When your telling the truth, it's nice and steady, when your intentionally dishonest, it registers large, noticeable changes. He said it's not rocket science but it is science and it's a reliable science.
He was very nice, polite and professional. I actually learned a few things which was cool because I was curios more than I was nervous and I was pretty nervous. I can't really say much else as it is confidential.
-
Thats awesome! Glad it worked out well for you and hope this job does also. Would like to see your truck back in action.

Thanks. Me too.
-
with the doc we didnt have to pass a poly. just some test, then some visual test. they give you a picture give you a few minutes to take it all it (prison seen were you might have 20 people in it) then ask you "what was the guy in the striped shirt doing?" then a spelling/grammar test (which i failed but they called me back to retake it. then you interviewed. now they do a psych test, in all honesty if i wasnt crazy back then i know i am now.
-
Lol. Yea it's alot different here too than it used to be.

Put a personal touch on the truck this evening.

Sorry to hear another Square has to sit for any amount of time... I dont know where you're located but I have a 70's 350 block sitting on a stand taking up space here in Rosharon, TX. It was given to me when I bought some parts for my truck, I know little about it. It would need some R&D time and a build, but Its free to a happy home if you or a friend want it.

So it's been about 6 weeks since I bought the new truck. I've been driving this thing all over the freaking country side. It had 163,xxx miles when I bout it and I'm already past 165,000, another 1500 miles and I'm gonna be due for an oil change and I changed it right when I got it! It's been great tho. I'm really loving it, I do miss my old truck very much. So far the new truck has been great during all the life stuff I got going on.
This was last week.
