I have a 78' 4x4 with a 81' fleetside bed on it. The problem I have is that I cannot just fill the gas tanks up. Both sides have the same problem and you have to hold the gas pump handle and fill them extremely slow to put gas in. Wont set at even the lowest detent on any gas pump. Anyone have any ideas about what is causing this?

Maybe a kink in the neck or some other type of blockage.

Lots of people complain about this. Mine does it too there are sometimes you can let it pump itself, others I have to hold it almost all the way out to get it to pump.

I had the same problem with my '94 F-450. Had to keep a set of RV leveling blocks in the possom-belly to drive the left rears up onto just to get the deisel into both tanks. I ended up having to get some 1" soft copper to redo the vent tubes on each tank because the rubber hoses kept getting kinked due to the sharp angles that they were run at from the facory, never had another problem. In fact I can even fill it up on the truck stop pumps now. They fill from empty to full in about a minute and a half, 20 gallons each.

Had this problem before.Took my filler hose to the parts supply and compared it to the various rad hoses.Picked one with a larger radius ,cut it to size and no more problem.

I just turn the filler nozzle upside down on my Chevy's it will fill then.

pop the filler tube off of the hose and vent hose. Drill a larger breather hole at the top and your problem should go away. My 74 is such a pita to put fuel in and I still need to do it to that one. If I remember I'll take pix when I do the one on my 85 this weekend.
