Title: 87TBI 350 vs 88 6.2L comparison
Post by: MuddiGGEr25 on November 06, 2016, 03:04:49 pm
Ok so i found some interesting information, and i might just have to go find a dang dyno somewhere once i am satisfied with my swaps for the spring, but i was looking at the information for the LL4 6.2L (j code)
http://matveynator.ru/f/9efda83135c6d53e16e47aab9a0122c4.pdf

 275 ft-lb @ 2000 RPM
 160bhp @ 3600

and the information here:  http://www.gmtuners.com/gminfo.htm
says the 87 5.7L ratings are

CR 9.0   225HP @ 4400    300ft-lb @ 2800
CR   9.5   240HP @ 4000           345ft-lb @ 3200

I wouldnt think the truck would get the higher CR, but who am i to judge, but if you just compare the run of the mill, 5.7L vs the 6.2  the 350 has more HP i think in part due to it being able to rev higher, and the curve, but if your just looking at torque the 350 only beats the 379 by 25ft-lb or 70ft-lb at best in stock form..... so either something is majorly wrong with my 6.2L because trying to get to 75MPH or even speed up on interchanges in bigger cities is dangerously slow

However cliffy has a 1987 tbi 350 block, but it can wipe the floor with a 6.5L TD, 5.3L, 5.7L vortec, even lighter trucks with the 4200, and 4.3L vortecs it can still wipe them all over the place, i have safely pulled and stopped 18,000lbs GCW at 55-60MPH (didnt dare go faster because it was snowing good)

here the best part: both trucks have a GM corporate 10bolt 8 lug front, GM 14FF rear, both trucks are 4.10AR, both have the 3/4 springs and shocks, both have the NP208, both weigh within 50lbs of each other at the scale (this is due to cliffy having a 18.4-16.1 in the back for testing)

Blue has a TH400, and cliffy has a TH350, all other things being equal except cliffy has ALOt more wind resistance due to flags, lights, bull bar, spoiler, and roofrack. but yet he has no problem reaching 100MPH with a little more if i needed it. (only on freeway racing< i would never go that fast in town)

So is my 6.2L just weak in general and someone really did cam the 350 or should i be expecting better performance out of the 6.2L?

I mean for *^& sakes, my RV with its new 454 can almost outrun cliffy and its 9600lbs on a good day, and 8ft wide and 12ft tall.

I am going to log some 0-60 times via GPS app later this week when i have time.

Oh and both are running identical tire sizes at the moment LRE

the 350s were always rated lower on the HP numbers than they really were, also the 6.2 is not a powerhouse, but it will benefit from replacing all the filters and checking/ fixing the injector pump shot volume.
