Title: Old Insulation under Carpet. Needed?
Post by: Spool on December 02, 2016, 09:16:54 pm
Hey Guys.

73' C20 Chevy.
Gutting the interior to do some mod's and under the carpet there is some terrible material which is partly damp and has
been rusting my floor.

Is it insulation? Is it necessary to replace and if so, costly?

At this point, I'm thinking I'm going to just drop the carpet back in without it. Any pointers or concerns?

Thanks guys.
-Thomas.

Google carpet jute

The rugs here can be purchased with jute I believe but ask Chris to confirm.

The dampness may be from a heater core leak. May want to check it out before installing new carpet.

No heater or AC, or leaks.
But it's certainly damp, the rust damage looks old, so maybe someone before me is guilty.

I'll keep the old and replace it in January hopefully.

Is there a product that helps with rust? Or is it pretty much just eating away at the metal?

Chassis Saver, POR15 are what I have used once you clean all the rust off.  You can also used a converter on it.

Our carpet kits listed above come with Jute attached to it.  If it is damp you have a leak.  with the carpet out pour water in the cowl.

Thanks Captkaos,

But any ideas as to what would be leaking? I don't have an AC... I can't think of anything other than weather from underneath; like nighttime moisture or dew?

In a vehicle that old probably leaking around the windshield... in several places more than likely. When restoring my 83, when I took the windshield out there were several holes rusted though along the bottom of the windshield frame which I had to patch. When I took a wire brush to it found several more that the paint was holding together......probably not what you wanted to hear.

Pour water down the cowl with a hose.  If you don't want a mess, take everything off the floor.

The insulation helps greatly to minimize road noise. Definitely something you want to keep.

BTW we also sell Silent Coat (http://store.73-87chevytrucks.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=7&Product_Code=SLTCOAT-2MM&Category_Code=7387INT) weatherstripping that is easy to use and reduces road noise.
