Title: Rebuilt vent windows not sealing
Post by: gntblue on December 27, 2016, 10:39:02 pm
I just rebuilt the vent windows on my truck. Truck is a 74 k10 but it has 81 doors on it.  I did my research and confirmed with Chris before I purchased the seal kit and vent window frames from him  (The black ones that hold the glass). I also purchased new glass from  .

I just finished installing them back into the newly painted frames and the glass is tight against the seals for the first 1/3 of the way up but by the time you get to the top of the glass there is an 1/8 inch gap between the glass and the seal.  What would cause this?  Will this go away once the frames are bolted back into the truck? All parts are new except the main frames which were not damaged when I removed them and they have been hanging from a wire in my shop for our months since I painted them.

Please help!

If they are reproduction frames, carefully measure where the pivot is welded to the frame. There was a company producing these and made a batch incorrectly. I know because I got one so the glass would not properly seat. You should be able to easily compare it to the old one. If it checks out okay, did you mix match 81-87 and 73-80 parts?

As far as i know i have all the correct parts for an 81 vent frame.  the seals fit great that i got from Chris but as you can see in the attached pictures something is wrong with the glass frame and the glass.  Its almost like the are short and the top pointed piece looks like it is too long.  And you can see there is about a 1/8" gap at the top of the frame.

Has anyone ever had this problem?

It appears you made the same mistake I did with one of mine. By using silicon in the channel instead of the rubber seal ( which is might near impossible to use ) you have the glass setting too far into the frame. It's probably bottomed out against the back. My driver side came out just fine and seals great. The passenger side , not so good. The glass is in so far that the closing mechanism doesn't even match up to the frame and I have the same gap. Currently there's a piece of duct tape sealing it off.  ;)  Now I have to figure out how to get the glass out of the frame so I can start over. If I can and can get it cleaned up I am still going to use silicon but will put three or four short pieces on kitchen match in as a spacer to hold the glass out further......... a good soaking in lacquer thinner ought to loosen it up.

Take a measurement from these two points. It should be 6" and if it's not you have one of the incorrectly made frames that are floating around the market.

I just measured it and it is 6".  So rattler12 your saying if I use the setting rubber strips it will fix the issue?

Attached are better pictures so that you guys can see the issue i am having.  The picture that shows the gap is when the window is closed and the latch is tight.  I have a 1/8" gap at the top between the glass and the rubber seal.

The setting rubber I bought was difficult if not impossible to use ( although it's entirely possible I didn't know the proper procedure ) When I get my vent window away from  the frame I am going to use the sealant again but put about an eighth inch spacer ( hence the kitchen match pieces ) into the frame at several places along the bottom and the front to act as  spacers to keep  the vent window from bottoming out in the frame. Keeping the glass further up and out should eliminate the gap.

Has anyone ever seen any videos that describe how to use the setting rubber?  All the videos I have seen use some kind of sealant to install the glass.

I think I answered this in your email but I never got a reply.  The glass isn't seated properly in the frame as it was glued in.

This is the only video 73-80 version of the rebuild but for the glass you need the Glass setting tape (I don't sell that) from crlaurance.com PN A4264
