Title: TH400 Electronic Kickdown
Post by: Jon87V20 on February 27, 2017, 09:52:46 pm
Before replacing the transmission in my truck, I noted that the kickdown wasn't working. I thought it was just because the cable was missing but after some reading, I'm seeing the TH400 didn't have a cable but instead is electronic. I did notice when I pulled the transmission there was nothing plugged in to that single spade connector on the side of the transmission. I did also find some haggard, dirty, and frayed orange wire that reaches the transmission hanging down.

From what I've read, '86 and prior trucks have a switch on the pedal for the WOT signal to the transmission but starting in '87, this was controlled by the computer. Is this true, or should I be looking for a switch by the pedal? I haven't been in there to look at it yet (it's difficult because the driver's side of the truck is up against the garage wall so I can't open the door).

The ECM switches a relay that energizes the detent solenoid inside the transmission via the orange wire you found tangling next to the transmission.

Thanks, bd. Now I know what that wire was for!
