1986 Chevy K10 Scottsdale with 305/700r4 auto and 4x4
First truck I've ever owned and was hoping to get something I could work on over time (bought it for $1200) but it seems that both front/rear seals on transmission are leaking and they are trying to quote me a bit over $1400 to rebuild. I live outside Atlanta, Ga and was wondering if anyone knew if this is a decent price or not as web searching shows a very wide range of prices but most seem to be over $1k.

For a complete quality rebuild with a warranty it sounds reasonable. We have an extremely reputable transmission shop that a friend of mine owns near here. I have had my 700R built by him and the price was around the same.

82......is your 454 a stock truck engine or has it been "enhanced" with other goodies? Reason I asked is I am thinking of changing my 83 from a 5 speed manual to an auto. My 454 has been tweaked considerably and am wondering if a 700R4 can handle the torque and HP and live very long.

If it is built properly it should be fine IMHO but, run that information by the builder and get his recommendation. My transmission was behind a diesel as mine originally was a diesel truck. My BB is not too radical but had to get a different TC switching from diesel to a gas motor and I upgraded some of the components based on the builders suggestions knowing what motor I had. I like firm shifts also.

Thanks for the update as it seems that price is pretty comparable for that transmission from everything I can find online (I know nothing about doing it myself so I need to done by someone) but I guess my next question from additional research is should I get it rebuilt or look for a different model of transmission? I am only using the truck for firewood, pinestraw, Home Depot runs etc.. .so it won't get a lot of use (monthly most likely). I would like to eventually work on getting a lot of the truck redone since there is basically no rust on it beyond some surface rust which is the biggest reason I want to fix it up.
Any recommendations for those who have had these trucks and transmissions for awhile?
Thanks again..
