Title: dual tank switch problem
Post by: 87swb on October 27, 2006, 11:20:00 am
i'm sure most people have never had this happen before but i seem to be havin a problem with the switch in the cab that lets you change fuel tanks. sometimes i cannot push the switch it's really hard to do and then if its stuck between the tanks it won't run or start up. and then it won't start on the right one and then you'll have to switch it to the left one and then it will start and run and then you can switch it back to the right one and it will run fine, it won't go dead or anything. can anybody troubleshoot me? this is my 305 tbi.

Can you remove the switch from the dash and operate it to see if it works correctly? It sounds like it's binding up, like it's hitting something behind it.

i don't really know if i can or not that switch has only done it once or twice, i think it may be the valve itself or whatever  it's called that switches the tanks, is there anyway it can be checked but i will check behind that switch and see if there is anyhting out of the ordinary that may be obstructing it and thanks for the replies

You may need to pull the switch apart and clean it.  Mine started doing that and I pulled it apart and cleaned it up and it works fine now.

I have pics if you need them...

man, i'm sorry i haven't been on here in awhile. but yeah you can put pictures up if you want. are you talking about the switch in the cab or the switching valve itself under the truck? appreciate this Roundedline.

I would start with the switch inside the cab.If it is binding up that's probably the problem. It cheap and easy to replace. The selector valve under the truck is the expensive part.

Where can you buy a new slector valve that goes under the truck? Mine is not working.  I put in a new switch in the cab.

not cheap, dealer item, time consuming- hard to get at-fussy job, but nice to have when done. hold switch fully down for a second-before letting go-when selecting sides.
