Title: temperature gauge inop
Post by: fiddler on May 08, 2017, 08:32:54 pm
I have a 1974 chevy stepside...c10.  I now have an inop temperature gauge.  There are 3 "ports" or connection points on the gauge housing.  I found the temperature sensor presently reading 240 ohms at the gauge housing connection points.  Does the 3rd connection point require 12 VDC?  Not sure how this would work without some kind of power....but there is none there.

thanks for your input,

ricky

Check the fuses and PC board connections.  Gauge pin connections are 12-volt ignition, ground and sender.

Don't assume it is the gauge. I recently had that issue and it ended up being the sender, that I had replaced last fall. I had replaced gauge and had same problem. You can look at my posts to see this. Surprised that was all it was.

Thanks for your help.  I checked the 12 VDC looked closely at the tabs holding the socket to the printed circuit "board".  One side was not latched in allowing the socket to come loose from the printed circuit.  I took the gauge housing out and re-seated that one and found a ground  on the fuel gauge doing the same thing.  Guess I got too excited when I was swapping the printed circuit over to this gauge housing.   Anyway, after re-seating both loose ones and re checking all others all is working great.  Thanks again.  (Always time to do it again if you get in a hurry and don't do it right.....)  :-)

Sometimes, getting the gauge clips to properly lock into the housing and seat snug against the PC board can be finicky.
