Title: Fuel Gauge Not moving at all
Post by: MrFiveOh on June 01, 2017, 09:36:21 pm
So i've done some research on here and cant find a post with my issue. Most issues are a pegged fuel gauge or something similar.

My issue i've run into is my fuel gauge doesn't move at all. I have removed the ground from the tank and no change to the gauge. At one time my fuel gauge did work however empty was at 1/4 and full showed past "F'" all the sudden one day the gauge stopped registering. I'm not sure what other steps to take.

Sounds like a fuel level float issue. I would take the sending unit out of the fuel tank and check it. May be that the float has a leak or come off entirely. I've had that happen on a couple trucks now. Or it could be the sending unit itself that's the problem

I had a similar problem on my 77 the gauge would get stuck around 1/4 tank randomly and the only thing that would fix it would be a hard slamming on the brakes. eventually that stopped doing the trick and it froze all together so i replaced the float/sending unit deal and that fixed the issue completely. just something to try

Removing the ground wire won't help you. Pull the sending unit wire and with the key on observe the gauge.

Ok will pull sending unit wire. Just fyi, the gauge doesn't move at all regardless of the tank empty or full, just stick at 1/4 if I wasn't clear before.

So  haven't been able to pull the sending wire yet, however I did check to see if I was getting power at the gauge so I pulled the gauge out and checked ohm readings. On my ohm reader I have option of 200, 2,000, 20k, 200k and 2000k.
I set it on 200 since its the lowest reading and I know the range is supposed to be between 0-90. When I check numbers in getting anywhere between 135-160. Not sure what that means but I'm getting some kind of power.  I would get those ranges dependent on how I put the red and black pokers on the metal tabs.....?
