Title: 12 bolt or 10 bolt??
Post by: cooltoolguy on November 25, 2005, 06:06:00 pm
i just pick up a 76 c-10 to part out with a 12 bolt rear, not sure of gear ratio yet.  now the 86 has a 10 bolt and i have an 84 with a 10 bolt.  question is...  what is the difference between a 12 bolt and a 10 bolt and what would be better to use in a build up (more hp from engine)  any help greatly appreciated.   thanks steve

The difference is the 12bolt is stronger.  It has a 8.875" ring gear versus a 8.5" ring gear on the 10bolt.

The other difference is the U Joint size, the cap diamiter is if I remember corectly smaller on the 12 bolt yoke, and the length of the cross is also different. You can get a jont with both dimensions for this aplication.
