Title: Are all th400 transmissions the same?
Post by: ih8mud on December 06, 2005, 06:45:00 pm
I am considering swapping my th350 for a th400.  I have a np203 transfer case.  I have located an adapter for mating a th400 to a np203 transfer case.  My question is will any th400 work.  Just curious if there is an difference between the 2wd and the 4wd.  I've heard that there is a difference in the length of the output shaft.  I have a 79 chevy long bed pickup truck.

Indeed the size of the transmissions on 4x4's are different.  The shaft length is different (shorter for the 4x4's).

4WD transmissions are lacking the tailhousing that 2WD tranny has.

Not sure about the TH 400s and a 203, but I have a two wheel drive short shaft TH350 mated to a 208 case in my Blazer. I had to remove the tail shaft housing and cut about an 1 1/2" off the output shaft.
