Hello! New member (I did post in the welcome board!) here with a just-purchased 1985 GM 350. Went to get it smogged and got dinged on this dingus looking obviously broken. It sits right next to the coolant hose on the intake. I thought it was a water temp sensor, but the one I ordered came in and it's not the same.

The little stainless steel pin in the middle pulls right out of the thing, too. ???
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the site! That is a thermal vacuum switch (TVS). The adjacent molded vacuum hose connector plugs onto the TVS. The vehicle emission control information (VECI) label on the radiator support should indicate what the TVS controls, so you can procure the correct replacement.
-
Ahh that makes so much sense, since a random disconnected vacuum hose flops around nearby.
I found the emission control system sticker on the air cleaner, if I can't figure out i'll post a picture of that. I think a lot of these type vehicles could get classified as Frankenvans... ;D

So, this is an '85 P30 Curbmaster with 350M engine? What is the three letter code on the VECI label?
-
Exactly!
The VCEI code says "GJY"
Have a new TVS to pick up on monday, it has 4 vacuum hoses connected to it, though It desn't look like any of them were molded. A lot of the vacuum lines have gotten looped or capped. I don't feel sure on how much of that got done when the rig got converted to propane, so I don;' wanna mess with it too much. I honestly don't think the CARB understands how clean propane engines run, since I *still* have to get this thing smogged. I also plan on calling up the smog referee on Monday and pleading that point. At least then I can actually get it registered, so when I need to drive it I have more than a wing and a prayer to go on. Luckily cops don;t seem to give these kinds of vehicles a second look. :-X
