Title: HELP Ignition issues
Post by: 78Hawk on October 02, 2017, 02:56:03 pm
I have a 78 Chevy C10.  The fuel tanks have been drained, new fuel filters added. A new msd coil. A new MSD distributor. A new ignition switch at the base of the steering column.  The Holley 4 barrel carb with electric choke has Been cleaned and is getting fuel. The truck will only crank up when I spray quick start in it. It will not idle. It won't crank sometimes. What's the issue(s)?

The issues according to what I just read are that you intermittently have a no crank condition. Additionally when it does crank you have to spray starting fluid to get it to start but it doesn't idle. Based on what you've written you have several problems that I would assume are attributed to your installations unless you are saying you attempted to remedy these situations by replacing these components. No way for us to determine as you haven't given enough information.

I would suggest you address the no crank condition first. Check your battery cables and connections. Check the installation of the ignition switch and adjustment and check your p/n switch adjustment. If no good go to the S terminal with a test light and verify B+ when cranking.

Thanks for any and all help. I got the truck two months ago and I've been going through the progressions. I think the MSD 6Al digital is connected wrong. I looked at it today and it says the hot and ground should be hooked directly to the battery and that's not the case. It's hooked up to a terminal box mounted on the side of the truck. I didn't put this box in but I've changed the coil and distributor because I have tested the box and it worked. I'm starting here first because that big arc that I keep getting when putting the battery cables on and off is a scary issue.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and inspect the cable connections at the starter solenoid. Ensure the cables are not touching anything and that they are properly positioned. Inspect the wiring going to your alternator and to the junction block on the firewall. Check for rubbed through insulation or pinched wires.

connect the MSD 6AL correctly, make sure the module is securely mounted with its rubber bushings. Follow the wiring diagram https://www.jegs.com/InstallationInstructions/100/121/121-6425.pdf
