Title: Braided fuel line?
Post by: cairopd1069 on November 21, 2017, 06:25:25 pm
1981 C10 305 2 Barrel Carb.
I need to replace the fuel line that runs from the fuel pump to the carb.  I ordered a pre-bent line from  , but it is going
to take a lot of adjustment to get the ends to attach where they need to and I'm not experience in bending metal lines.  Can you use flexible line or do they even make a flexible line for that application?

It is best to run the metal line. As long as you don't kink the line you can add bends. If you do not have a bender you can gently clamp the line in a vice with jaw protectors and manipulate the line with moderate pressure. Lean it over a rounded object such as a can or a pipe. How far off the mark are you?

Probably 1"-1 1/2" from lining up with the carb.  I went ahead and connected the line to the pump since it is the hardest to get to.

if it ends up being to far off to bend you could cut it and put an inline fuel filter using small pieces of rubber fuel line in between.Or you could flare it or use a compression fitting adapter to the filter also. But I think if its an 1 1/2 off you can probably bend it

Thanks, I'll try bending it.

A tubing bender can be had for pretty cheap that would likely do the trick without risk of it kinking.  I reluctantly bought one from Harbor Freight to bend the new fuel lines for my LS conversion and it worked great!  I read the online reviews first and found that the main issue with the Harbor Freight ones was to be sure the two die halves lined up perfectly.  Might have to go through a couple of boxes and pick the best one.  That is what I did.

First, which carburetor do you have?   i thought by 81 all trucks had q-jet?

Ok, interesting;  It appears that some 81 305's did come with a 2 barrel----a dualjet, which is basically the same as a quadrajet except with only 2 barrels.

BUT, it also appears that dualjets only came with a front fuel inlet---like BOP carbs.  So this is why it may be difficult to find a pre-bent metal line?

Can you take a pic of what you got?

Yes the filter is on the front.  I will take a pic later today.  The line was supposed to be pre-bent, and it is close, but not exact.
Thanks for the responses.
