Title: 4speed to 5 speed transmission swap
Post by: 427adam on March 27, 2006, 01:16:00 am
I am the new owner of a 1985 crew cab dually. (454 and M465 4-speed) I would like to either replace the old 4 speed with a newer style 5 speed or add a Gear Vendors auxilary transmission. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions? There is a few companies that sell "conversion kits" for changing the whole transmission. Is the Tremec TK0-II or the New Venture NV 4500 the stronger transmission? I know the old Muncie is nearly bulletproof and adding an auxilary transmission would be the easiest, and probably most expensive route. I was thinking that the newer transmission may shift a little nicer??? Comments??? Thanks -Adam

If you are using the Truck for "work", the TKO is a passenger car trans, so you want to get the NV4500.  It is like the SM465 with an overdrive.
