Title: Overdrive
Post by: Smitty31 on April 17, 2018, 06:07:36 pm
1986 c10 4.3 v6 400 transmission 2wd. What is the latest model overdrive trans that will work with my truck. I know the 1987 overdrive trans is better than a 1983 - 1986. But will a newer overdrive trans than a 1987 work.

The 700R4/4L60 is the least expensive non computer controlled trans with overdrive. Anything newer requires computer, sensors, wiring etc.

Depends on how much wiring you want, and if the trans has been rebuilt.

The 700r4 automatic was made until 88* replaced by the 4L60, until 93 or 94, when it was again replaced by the 4L60E. The E designates electronic shift control.

The 4l60 is basically the same as a 700r4, some minor internal changes, just a name change.

88* I've seen several different swap over years for when they called it the 700r4, or the 4L60, and vice versa.

In a 1/2 ton 2wd, any slightly built 700r4 will be fine, unless it's behind an LS, in which case slightly even more built may be better.

If I remember from my research, the cases will vary, and some years are better then others. This has to deal with valve body changes, and passage changes.
