Title: Bell housing cover plate
Post by: Ronno6 on April 30, 2018, 12:09:30 pm
Things continue to develop in a haphazard manner with my 4 speed conversion.
I finally removed the TH350.
Upon removing the flex plate  I discovered that my motor is a one piece rear main seal motor.
First problem that creates is that the flywheel I purchased won;'t fit. GRRRRRRRRRRRR

Now, the lower cover for the bell housing will not fit the one piece seal arrangement.
It appears that there is a lip around the cutout for the crank that is tabbed to to fit the flange of the oil pan.

It is too small to fit around the rear main seal.
Will I be safe in trimming the cover to fit around the seal, or is that likely to rattle??

I have not as of yet found a bottom cover that will fit as is.

Amazing what can be accomplished with a pair of tin snips, pliers and a hammer.

All better now............

I guess the bell housing setup was not used with the 1 piece rear main seal setup.
Marrying old to new has it's bumps............

They did start using 1 piece rear mains around 88 I think, came across 1 manual that had the right cover for a 1 piece.

But a majority are for two piece rear mains, and a little trimming hasn't caused any abnoxious noise for me....but I also can't hear much above the diesel...

It isn't the prettiest job, but it will be in front of the flywheel and I don't think it will be seen there!
Trimming required notches at the top of the arc on each side to clear the oil pan, which protrudes past the end of the block.

I installed the bell housing, cover plate and starter today.
All went well except I cannot get the cover plate bole in behind the oil filter.
I will remedy that when I replace the filter.
I think it'll work!
