what years had the oil dipstick on the driver side? a friend just picked up an 85 gmc 4x4 and it has an older 350 in it . we looked but can't read the #'s on the block. all he was told was that it was older than the truck.

My 76 has the dipstick on the driver's side as well.....

1979 and before: Driver side stick, 2 piece rear main
1980-85: passenger side stick, 2 piece rear main
1986-up: passenger side stick, 1 piece rear main
69-85 "GM Shortblock": 2 piece rear main, Pass. and Driver stick provisions.

That's very interesting! My 81 GMC SB was rebuilt to look like a 85 Chevy and the motor is a mild 350 rebuilt .060 but I don't really know anything what's inside or the year of it. I do know it has a driver side dipstick though so I guess its then a pre-79.

I wish I could tell what was inside of it, like cam, heads, pistons, compression. Its kinda weak on power.
