Title: Transmission problems
Post by: 86GMC4x4 on May 02, 2006, 10:26:00 pm
I have 84 Chevy shortbox with a 305 and TH700R4 transmission. I drove 50km from work to home today. I had to use drive instead of overdrive because wind was to strong. I had stop at a light and when i went to take off it start shuttering and shaking. I got up to about 30km/h and it seemed like it was slipping. I then shift it to overdrive and it seemed to run ok and it got me home. Checked fluid level and it was good and colour was good too. I took it out again about an hour later and it was still the same. If i need to rebuild it how hard are they to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

torque converter slipping or things inside that R4 goin wrong either way have fun. 700R4's are known by their problems i've never seen one work properly while my th400's have never given me a lick of trouble. your best bet? get a new tranny built by someone with a warrentee. B&M or TCI are the ones i'd recommend either way the devil lives in that tranny

GM had the problems taken care of by about 86 with the 700R4s, not to say they don't go just like anyother auto trans. It was the early ones that were completely junk. I would shop around to get yours rebuilt. If you remove and install the price might not be as bad. Make sure if you perform labor yourself that they will still warantee it. There is a trans shop near me that only gives warantee if they do the whole job.

Could be a dumb question but here goes, Have you checked the filter??? i'm not too experianced with the 700R, but my 400 slipped some when I bought the truck, and after 2 fluid and filter changes, its fine now.

88-91 are the best 700R4's that have all the "good" part in them from the factory.
