Title: Transmission question
Post by: ssdents on October 07, 2018, 11:09:10 pm
I bought an '82 short bed a couple weeks ago. Previous owner said it's a 383 stroker with 3.73 gears. I don't want to change either characteristics, but I want to be able to take advantage of them and be able to run on the highway at a relatively low rpm. What transmission should I look at? Some have said a 4l80e, but the current setup is not electronic. Is there a non-electric version? Pardon my ignorance. Transmissions have always confused me.

700r4 is the only one you can go with without a computer from GM. you can have it built up to handle the 383

You can buy an external controller to run the 4L80 or a 4L65 without the stock computer, but it looks like the typical price is about $600 for the controller.  It would probably be cheaper to have a 700R4 rebuilt to specs that would hold up to the power of the 383 stroker.

i have a "black box" on my cummins/4l80e. it was i think 300, some say its a "bad" setup because it runs full line pressure. the only con i see is that it made an automatic trans into a manual
