Title: Steering boxes
Post by: Captain Swampy on October 31, 2018, 11:12:09 pm
Brooke needs a new steering box. I haven't seen good reviews on any remans. Lares makes a new box, part #11263 for $335. I can't find any reviews for it, or even many for Lares in general. Lifetime warranty to the original owner. What I want is a steering box that doesn't need a warranty, LOL.  Anybody ever bought a Lares? I'm open to other brands, I just want a good box the first time. Thank you.

Thanks for the info. I think we're going to try the new box and hope it lasts as long as the original.

Lares is good quality.  I also have used Redhead Steering Gears.  I have one of those on my '77 K20 after I blew the end of the casting out on my stock one.

Older thread but I will add that I have a AC Delco reman waiting to go back for warranty. I guess it's really hit or miss.

I have an ACDelco reman steering box ready to install in my 1984 C10, 2wd, manual trans, 250 ci.  I was able to remove the pitman arm nut with an adjustable wrench, but will need to torque it when doing reinstall.  The nut is either 33mm or 1 5/16".  In the parts store the 1 5/16 seems OK but a bit of slop.  No where can I find a 33mm to test the fit before plunking down cash.

Is it possible one of y'all could confirm the nut size so I might order on line with no worries?

Thanks for the help,

JS

I've only used a 15" adjustable on the ones I've ever done.  Got it as tight as I could in the center position with the steering column locked.  Never had an issue with any of them coming loose

Thanks Zeig,

I may do that.

The torque rating for the nut is 185 ft lbs.  I have ordered a 33mm socket for the nut so we'll see.

I plan to mount the box to the frame today and maybe install new PS hoses.  Installed a new flex coupling on the box last night.
