Title: Brake pedal help
Post by: 2tone4by on January 31, 2019, 06:51:57 pm
Hello, I have installed an automatic transmission in my truck that was a three speed on the column. How big a job is it to change the brake pedal out from an automatic truck donor.i have cut the clutch pedal off out of the way under the dash, but was wondering how difficult it would be to change outthebrake as the pedal is much smaller than the automatic pedal..any thought or suggestions much appreciated

You cut it off? You could have swapped it out and sold off your old setup to someone doing an opposite conversion. It's essentially unbolt, disconnect relatively simple task. The pushrod attaches to the booster, brake light switch etc.

Does the steering column have to be taken out to replace the pedal assembly

On the 72 and older no.  I haven't tried on the 73 and newer, just always removed the entire unit that does require the removal of the steering column and brake booster if equipped with power brakes.

The one I made an automatic I just left the clutch pedal in it and the spring kept it on the floor.

That was my thinking..the only reason of thought of changing it was to get the wider brake pedal that automatics have . I gues  I could have some weld a plate on top of the one in it now and buy a rubber pad for the automatic.....what you think. Done got too old to crawl around under these dashes much anymore☹️

Some bare bones trucks only have a small brake pedal.  I guess it is a personal preference or drive and automatic with 2 feet
