Post by: shortchevy84 on July 08, 2006, 09:08:00 pm
looking at putting this engine into my 84 chevy. can it run on 87 octane as a daily driver? will my 700r4 need to be built up at all to handle the extra power? and how small of gears can i run in the back to keep some gas mileage?

The web site has a tech line you can call.  But w/ 9.5 compression, you may not have any problems, but my 383 stroker w/ 9.2 to 1 engine does require the high test 93.  If it diesels and knocks, you may wanna bring it up to 90+ octane like i did.

It comes with its own ECM, but you will need a laptop to do any adjustments.

With aluminum heads it should be ok on the street with 87 octane, but....  As for the current trans, how old is it?  If it has never been rebuilt, it will probably be ok for a while, but if you plan to beat on it, well, then there is no telling.

thats awesome that it comes with ecm, and it says it comes with some little calibration module that replaces the need for a laptop. the transmission was rebuilt about 10 000km ago. i won't be racing or anything, just when i need that extra power for beating the guy next to me at a red light. edelbrock doesn't seem to want to answer my emails about the octane level. so thank you very much for your input, as i can tell you know very much about the engines and their specifics. i won't need a new torque converter will i?

What rear end gears are you running now?If you want a good jump off the line you could run 3:73,but your milage would suffer.3:42 would jump OK and with the overdrive wouldn't be too bad on the pocket book.

BTW that engine looks Oh So Sweet.

i think they are approx 3.43. that is what some website said i had when i looked up the rpo codes. which everyone has told me is actually 3.42. i think i should probably put new gears in anyway when i do it, cuz the old diff seems to have oil all over it, and i might as well put the nice chrome cover on it too.

Rearend probably just needs cleaned up, resealed and refilled.  I have heard nothing but leak problems out of the chrome covers, plus, you really can't see them, and if you do, it is like a mirror floating under your truck....

Title: engine seems to pricey
Post by: shortchevy84 on July 18, 2006, 06:40:00 pm
that edelbrock engine is listed at 10500 polished which is a bit out of my price range. a week or so ago, i checked the local gm dealership, and he said the best choice is the ram jet 350, seen here
www.crateenginedepot.com/...22C53.aspx

this engine says it also needs 92 octane, but would it run on 87? obviously it would produce less power. this engine would be ideal also, as it is fuel injected, as i want all the modern day bonuses such as remote starter and ac, and it is on sale! not sure of the price, the line is  busy right now. can i use all the old accesorries of my 84 350,( power steering, alternator, pulleys, belts and whatever else doesn't come with the engine) as many of them are new on the old engine. thank you for any replies.

you can't really build a performance engine to run on 87 octane....are you looking for performance, or are you looking for a daily driver?
