Title: can I use this distributer?
Post by: jetman373 on October 13, 2006, 02:00:00 am
I have a 85 silverado,305/350,2wd,shortbox. Im replacing the 305 with a 327. I noticed there is a odd plug going into the distributer from the firewall. Is this a computerized distributer? Im using a edlebrock intake and a holley 600 carb. Im also loosing all of the smog stuff. Do I need a different distributer,or can I still use this one? Thanks!

There is no tach. The plug is a larger inline 4 wire that goes into the passenger side of the firewall.

If memory serves, the small block distributor should work on any chevy small block.  Throw that 327 in her and  reuse the distributor from the 305 and just plug the wires back up. Do not use an external coil!  The HEI distr in your 305 should have its coil inside the cap.

That would be a very simple changeover, just depends on the year of the 327 and ensuring you have enough accessory holes in the front of the heads for your brackets fo alt, pwr steer, etc.

I love the 327's!!!

If its like a 4 prong plug it goes to the computer located in the passenger side by the glove box. Gm tried a system that would monitor how things ran like the carb and dist. by a computer which i would bypass by finding a earlier model hei unit.

It will work, but you need to bypass the computer control.  This is the infamous ESC that was used on the 305's.

Read this to eliminate it:

You will like the 327.  Just grab an HEI unit from an old 350 in a bone yard or somethin'.  The just hook up the power wire after following the garage instructions.  E.S.C.(Electronic Spark Crap)
