Title: GM theftlock...I am cheesed with GM
Post by: zieg85 on February 29, 2020, 03:00:47 pm
Well I went to put an old radio in my 2001 that I took out years ago and now it is locked.  You used to be able to call GM and get the unlock code but that number doesn't work any longer.  I will be darned if I pay $20 to someone for a code just to see if a radio still works or not...Rant over

I work at a GM dealer and unfortunately they have discontinued support for the theft lock radios. The bulletin that they have issued says they are evaluating weather to support it in the future. Knowing GM that means they won’t. From what I understand there is no database available at this time.

my radio in my 04 imp is broken to the point where i only get AM stations. i tried a radio that was unlocked but in order to unlock them you have to disable the memory. that was too much BS so i still have a broken radio. but on the plus side i listen to rush, hannity and a few other good talk host. i think i can get one unlocked at the dealer but then i might as well buy an aftermarket unit so i can trust the cd player

Sucks is all...Just another reason to dislike Government Motors...  After all the issues with my wife's 2017 GMC Acadia transmission I am thinking of shopping other brands after being GM Loyal all these years

A lot of people write the code in the owner's manual or in the glove box. Did you look? You can also remove the chip to bypass the theftlock

My radio isn't the RDS version but I will take the bottom off.  What do I have to loose.

That procedure won’t work on the model he is trying to unlock. That model has no code to enter. It is vin locked. If you can get the backup code out of it you might be able to google it and see if any body has the same code.

482489 is the radio code.  It costs now where it used to be a free GM service.  I will google that and see if anyone has it.

I really didn't look too hard there for ya, sorry it wasn't the same unit. United Radio used to do all of the radio, instrument cluster repairs when I worked at GM as the authorized repair center. You might try them for additional support https://www.unitedradio.com/contact-us/

As far as brand loyal, unless they are somehow taking care of you for being brand loyal, then I don't see why anyone would be. Every manufacturer pumps out endless amounts of poorly made garbage these days. The automotive industry is STRUGGLING to find talent and rather than raising the pay scales and bettering the working conditions to attract more qualified pros, they are going down the path that Obama endorsed. Disposable cars, plug n play parts changing programs and completely unaffordable repairs for out of warranty automobiles. When one module goes down and it costs more than the value of the car to repair, people will just get a new car. This is the future so hang onto your bad 73-87's  8)

Thanks Vile...  Brand preference has always been GM.  I liked all the Ford products as company cars but in a mid sized SUV I preferred the Acadia over anything else.  You are right about the plug and play things.  My wife's Acadia is back at the dealer for the 3rd. time for transmission issues still covered on the 60K drive train warranty.  I hope they figure out and fix the problem.

Everything is junk these days. It's unreal how much garbage is produced. It's really sad.

Mid 90's radios that actually said theftlock on front.

1) So, was only 90's theft-lock?

2) Yes, i think gm's "quality" as well as others is deteriorating?   My folk's cadillac has numerous problems----glove box doesn't open, pass door can't open from the outside and one tailight assem had water leak into it and needed to be replaced----$800!  Out of warranty of course.....
This is a $45,000 car now.....
