Title: static timing

is there a way to static time a HEI distributor? in case it is not called static timing, what i mean is with the engine not running and using a 12 volt test light. i've done this on old air cooled VW motors and i was wondering if it can be done here.

Are you referring to initial timing? An HEI has a centrifugal advance mechanism so you need to set your initial timing with a timing light. You could use a test light to trigger or receive a coil fire but the accuracy and usefulness of this serves no purpose.

i am talking about the initial timing. this dist. is included in the tuned port inj. i am installing and has no vacuum advance. the instructions say set initial timing at 6btdc. i was wanting to do this before i fired it up. the actual timing will be controlled by the computer once it's running. this initial timing is just for the "limp home" mode.

i just got the new system running and coolant was coming shooting out between the intake manifold and head. i guess now i have to take it all back apart and and redo the gasket.

Yikes! Something is seriously wrong if coolant was leaking from there.

As far as initial timing you have to have the engine running in limp mode and set it to 6°s BTDC.

Just line the distributor up with the rotor pointing @ #1 on TDCC.

Good luck with that coolant leak.

I'm hoping the coolant leak is because i didn't seal the intake gasket around the coolant ports.
