Is it possable to switch from a 3 speed manual on the tree to a 4 speed manual on the tree?

I am looking at a 1972 chevy C10 w/ a 307 and 3 on the tree. I was thinking about changing the motor to a 454 but I would have to change the trans to a 4 or 5 speed and was woundering if I could use the shifter on the tree for a 4 or 5 speed?

They're floor shifters- Saginaw, Muncie.

So bassically if I use a saginaw or Muncie I can use the column shifter?

You can't use the column shifter for anything but a 3 speed, unless you plan to re-engineer it for the other lever....
