Title: rearend,gas guage and temp guage?

81 k10 -when i rock the back tires while watching the rearend pumpkin while its in park how much should the rearend  pumpkin move up and down?also my gas guage stopped working,just lays there,what should i check and lol temp. guage just lays there until i shut the truck off and then it starts to rise-any and all help would be appreciated.  thx

I am assuming you are talking about spring wrap? The torque you put into the rear tires by rocking it I would say the pinion should move up and down an inch maybe two? The softer your springs the more wrap you will get.

it just started this and i can fill it when i take off and start-this mean the springs are probably wore out?  thx

You can feel it when you take off? As in it makes a clunk and you can feel it take up the slack? Or you can feel the rearend lift?  Need to explain better.

i can feel the rearend shift when i stop and when i take off again i can feel it shift again accompanied with a clunk

Sounds like your spider gears are shot, and you are mistaking the slack getting taken up for the rearend shifting. If the U bolts are tight, and the springs are not broken the rear end is not going to move enough for you to feel it in the cab.

Could this shifting you feel be a worn out u-joint? The clunk you hear when starting out and stopping sounds like one of the symptoms of a bad one. If the differential gears are worn, I'd expect to hear a grinding sound coming from the pumpkin (dif case) if it moved at all.

heard on another site it could be the driveshaft yoke could be stripped where it goes in to the transmission, anyone ever heard of this? thx

The u-joint could be it too, didn't think of that. As far as the slip yoke I have seen this on a front drive shaft so I supose it could happen on the rear as well.
