Title: New Bumper Quality
Post by: Texas455 on October 21, 2022, 09:21:43 am
I searched and only found old post regarding new bumper quality. I want a new factory looking front bumper for a 78 C10.  I bought the Holley HLY-04-119 since the description states "heavy gauge steel".  It arrived yesterday so I measured thickness in several different areas and compared to the original.  Of course thickness varies in different areas due to the stamping process and the drawing of the metal, I'm aware of that.  But in average the new one is .010 to .020 thinner.  I know that's not a lot but just lifting the two you can feel a big weight difference.  It does look good though and I will prob just go with it.  We had this truck since new and the original bumper didn't look perfect so I guess I can't expect better from aftermarket.  My question is does anyone have one aftermarket who can give me the thickness or recommend a quality replacement?  My original measured .100 to .118 depending on where I measured.  The Holley measured .090 to .095.  Doesn't sound like much until you take both in hands.  I would like to know the thickness of any other that was bought in the last year or two since things have changed so much in the last couple years, thanks.

Mine was aftermarket and it is not nearly as thick as the factory.  When I tightened down the carriage bolts I started to get impressions from the support brackets on the backside.

Hmm. I reviewed that link I couldnt find any violation in this thread. A guy mentioned a brand he bought, expressed dissatisfaction with it, and asked for better options. Didnt see anything about anyone endorsing products from other vendors.
Maybe someone should post a reply with the measurements from a bumper this forum store sells.

That's because I edited out the original violations in the first two posts as seamlessly as I could.  The third post is my FYI to the original posters so they would know why.

I bought a bumber from the forum store, and it’s of excellent quality. Brackets bolts, the whole pkg., very satisfied.

Got any measurements for the original poster? He is probably still trying to figure out if the forum stuff is the same junk he already bought. That is, if he is still paying attention to this thread and hasn't gone elsewhere to the other forums...

Thanks for the replies, yes I'm still here.  I just haven't figured out how to get notifications from this forum yet and haven't been logged on.  I'm still looking for thicknesses from other vendors.

...I just haven't figured out how to get notifications from this forum yet...

Go to your Profile.  Look under the heading Modify Profile and click on Notifications.  The uppermost box should read, "Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic."  Clicking that box should send notifications to your email address whenever replies post to the threads in which you have participated.  You can tailor the notifications using the associated drop-down boxes.  Once you are done making your selections, click Save settings.  You may change the settings as often as you wish.

Tex,

Not sure where you are going with this...

If it's to stay as original as possible, I too respect 'period correct' builds. ( if that's your motivation)

Perhaps safety is the reason?

But really, what is 10 thousandths between friends? And to go further, it's pry not American steel, but re-purposed American, Asian, or European steel, depending on where it's made of course.

My '78 front bumper had blems that could not be worked out, bought an aftermarket and she looks really good.
