Title: SM 465 top cover won’t come free

I got a SM465 from a wrecker for cheap so I could rebuild it but the top cover is only coming up about half an inch.  I tried prying it off with pry bars, and could try bigger bars but don’t want to break anything. I’ve never seen the inside of a SM465 before, any suggestion welcomed, thanks.

Sorry man, I got nothin...never been in one.

Can you see anything in the 1/2 inch gap?

Maybe ask Rocky?  8)

Did you remove the shifter? Put it in reverse and gently move it half way forward, the wiggle the top plate.

Thanks, Ive been meaning to respond, for the welcome and the tip both.

I forgot to mention in my question that the stick was not in it when I got it and I would have tried Neutral first.
So I'm going to take the one out of my running 79 today and try that.  It's in 4th now.  I'm sure when I get it in neutral it will work, there were no metal pieces in the oil when I got it.  Will post what I find out.

Half way in reverse is correct.

Thanks, I'll try that when I get that stick.  It looks like I'll have to borrow one off my 79 and I've been too busy to do it lately
