Title: Bowtie color
Post by: Mr. Machanic on December 03, 2023, 02:37:51 pm
I'm new to this so forgive my ignorance....but...
What color should the grill bowtie be?
78 Big 10, Bonanza & Scottsdale.

I just can't seem to find a decisive answer.
Blue or Gold?

Please tell me where you found the info and,
Thanks in advance.

After doing a quick search, there are tons of options for a lighted bowtie.

So....I may or may not monkey around with fab-ing my own. We shall see.

First pic isn't a decal.  it's a thin piece of embossed aluminum with paint on it.  Thats how they did it from the factory.   Second is a repop of the original dual post bolt on style.

Two pics.  One is of the NOS grill I still have I bought years ago.  I bought two of them at the same time.  one is on the truck, the other is a spare.   They came with the stamped thin aluminum and painted emblem on them.
The second pic is of the emblem I peeled off the nos grille on the truck so I could install the 2 post fancy emblem.  It's just hot glued on there but you can;t peel it off without warping it and such.  I kept it and hot glued it to the side of my toolbox.  in that pic you can kinda see its a piece of aluminum thats been stamped/embossed and then painted.

Went into my old pic archive.   I bought those NOS grilles in 2007.  Paid $70 each for them from the dealer.  The OE grill had gotten frail and broken long ago so the truck had the repop grille with no emblem in it.   I couldn't stand it.  they look terrible without the bowtie.  it's supposed to be there and looks weird without it.

Here's a pic of the new grill on the truck in 2007 and a long shot of how the truck was back then.

Wow.  Been 17 years since I got the truck.   I didn't know that till just right now.  Wow!

Agreed, the repro grills with no place for the emblem are truly butt ugly.

I found the correct grill at a junkyard that was closing down, sitting on a barrel outside the office door.

Asking 'what's the story on this grill?', answer; 'some guy just wanted the bowtie'.

Mine for $25.

My bowtie is showing some age, pry 7-8 year old Sino model.

I have a bunch of these 73-74 foil emblems.  http://store.73-87chevytrucks.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=7&Product_Code=0850-045&Category_Code=
Probably should put them on ebay or something.

I didn't know those existed.  They would probably sell like hot cakes on ebay.
