Title: Fuel Guage
Post by: SILSquarebody on August 04, 2024, 08:11:32 pm
I bought an 86 K5. I am slowly working thru all the problems with it. The gas guage show it is way over full when you start it. Can someone tell me what color the wires are for the fuel guage please? Ground problem? Or what you think?

1986 Factory Wiring Manual (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/techinfo/7387CKMans//Wiring/ST_352_86_1986_Chevrolet_GMC_Light_Truc_Wiring_Manual_CK_10_30_Only.pdf)

Functional Tests of Factory GM Electric Gauges (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=25339.msg211241#msg211241)

Does the fuel gauge needle point at ~3:00 o'clock position and remain there continuously with the ignition switched ON or does the needle drop normally while driving?

Yes it does stay at 3 o clock.

There's an open in the signal circuit from the sender, or the sender rheostat in the fuel tank is open, or the sender isn't properly grounded.  For wire colors and routing, refer to the linked factory wiring manual.
