Title: Quadrajet Replacement
Post by: Rapid Roy on July 08, 2025, 12:27:25 pm
Planning to replace the Carter Q-jet soon. Wanting to replace with new. Have not purchased new before, only had rebuild. Is there anything special needed to be done prior to install?

TIA

where are you planning on getting a "new" Q-Jet?  Edelbrock stopped making them a while back.

Not sure. Have seen some online stated as new, not re manufactured but not sure. Not specified as Edelbrock or any other brand.

I bought a QJ/Rochester from National Carb. VZ installed and tuned it (with a new engine), haven't touched it since, going on like 8 or 9 years. Gripe! ....has it been that long?!

I bought two from National, one for my daily and one for a project.

Daily wouldn't adjust on idle screws, turned in completely and the engine still ran.

Sent it back and they fixed it at no cost, even thought just out of warranty.

Replaced the throttle body and some other items.

If they don't have a carb to match what you have, they will rebuild yours. Good outfit!!

I acknowledge this topic is two-months old, nevertheless, I'd like to put in my two-cents.
The first question I always ask is, "Is something wrong with the carb you have?" Like the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Unless your QJ is physically damaged beyond repair, e.g., hit with a mallet, it’s best to stick with it. Your car’s linkage, fittings, intake, choke, etc., are all designed to work in harmony with the QJ. Furthermore, as already mentioned, the carb that came with your truck is calibrated for your truck.

Good question. Thanks!

I have an older GM car, with a QJet, no smog requirement. I paid a smog tech a C-note to sniff the Carbon excess, and adjust it down. It smells alot better...

It's been stated on other threads that these carbs are the best and the worst... you decide  8)

Quadrajets were designed for these trucks and calibrated when they were new, but saying they are still calibrated after 35+ years and 100K miles, not so much.  Anything still running today would need adjustments especially if the motor is original.  Personally I much prefer Quadrajets, second only to EFI.

…saying they are still calibrated after 35+ years…

The rule of thumb is anything that can be adjusted can fall out of adjustment. That's why tune ups are done at regular intervals. Worn parts are replaced and adjustments are administered to bring instrument readings back into spec.
