Title: Clutch & Flywheel setup
Post by: Da67goatman on March 31, 2026, 09:12:48 am
Background:  TBI 350 converted back to carb with HEI distributor along with np833 4 speed transmission from behind a 250ci straight six all going into a 62 c10. I'm in need of some assistance in picking the correct parts to mate the two.

I have the factory bellhousing with fork but would like to run a hydraulic master/slave setup for packaging.  It has been so long, I have forgotten about the multiple balancing and rear main options that the SBC has and have never dealt with a clutch that wasn't just a kit for that specific vehicle.  I know some of you die hard manual guys have all this stuff figured out so if you could recommend parts, I would be most grateful.

Look up parts using an 87 R10 350 for MY6 application.

Will that clutch require changing to a hydraulic throwout bearing?  Or can I use an external that pushes the factory clutch fork and throwout bearing?  The old style pressure plate only has 3 fingers vs the many of the newer style.

So I just swapped the clutch in my 75 Jimmy from the ole 3 finger to a Bellville spring type and boy is it easier and smoother. Are you familiar with the hydraulic clutch master and slave used on these trucks? They are external, not internal.

That factory external slave style is what I would like to use. I wasn't sure if the 87 r10 you referenced has a hydraulic throwout bearing or an external slave. Thanks a bunch for helping me get this sorted.  Is there a specific brand that seems to be better quality or brands that are trash quality?  I was leaning toward a LUK or exedy clutch kit, but I have no experience with either.  Same with a flywheel, any brands to stay away from?
