I own a 1985 GMC Sub/2WD and was wondering how I can make it into a nice truck. Firstly, I was gonna get a new engine for it, say a GM 385 with an Edelbrock carb, intake, and KN filters. I'm running glasspacks out the exhaust but it's not true dual. Also, I'm gonna replace the front clip with an 89-91 clip as an upgrade. As far as performance is concerned how could I take this truck to the next level and smoke the competition?

How much competition do you really have to smoke out there in the fullsize 4 door SUV market? Heh heh.

The matter of it is I want a powerful SUV that can smoke anything out there. I need the guidance nessarry to bring this project to life. I know of plenty of SUVs that have superchargers and the like. I just need the advise as far as the engine work is concerned to bring at least 600ft/lbs of torque out of the engine.

First thing id do is get as much weight as you can off the thing. Ive never known one for its 0-60 times...
There is tons of stuff you do to an engine...
cams, pistons, exhaust, carb's. Depends on how much gas you want to use. Id have to say id loose it if i seen a suburban flying past a Cobra Mustang. hehehe.I just happened to find this link so guy who 'races' his ramcharger...

First of all in a suburban you have a lot of weight and if you are looking to build something powerful enough to move it like you want you best start out with a big block.

Get one of them there blown 540 ci big blocks. merlin makes them. It puts out roughly 900HP. Then see about port/polishing the heads, bigger valves or camshaft. Im not sure what those motors come with, loose as much weight as possible (fiberglass front clip, lose AC/Heater/ duct assembly, aluminum radiator.). A TH400 with 4.11 rear end would help out some, you would want to address the suspension, maybe ladder bars or traction bars. And fancy paint to finish it off.

Headers with 3" duals, H-Pipe, and 1 chamber flowmasters, them Japanese Handwriting looking stickers those import fellas use, they do make you go faster.....

Try Speed-O-Motive. They've got a blown dual-carb 540 inch Rat making almost 1050 horses, and an akly-fueled blown/injected 540 with 1280 horse. They're expensive at $13,200 and $19,995 respectively, but they would get the job done and then some.
